Proposal: Food Restored

2 to 5, with 2 def. Less than quorum not voting against. Failed by Derrick.

Ty’s Niece came close.

Adminned at 02 Jul 2019 17:13:53 UTC

Add to the rule “Food” the following paragraph:

If a Wizard has at least 1 Food, then they can set their Food to 9.

This rule is from my niece. She explained it like this: The max limit for this rule is 10 food. So then why is the limit 9 for this rule? Because it’s like if you’re buying something, then the storekeeper gives you the thing before you pay for it, and then you pay for it. (And the food costs 1 food.)

Proposal: Will of The Counsel

Create a new rule titled Majority Vote

A Wizard may cast a vote of MAJORITY on a proposal by including the text “:MAJ:” in a comment. A vote of MAJORITY is considered to be valid and either FOR if, once all DEFERENTIAL votes are counted, more EVCs are voting for a proposal than have voted against it or AGAINST in all other cases.

I thought about including a minority vote, but I don’t think it would do anything else other than slow the game down.
Anyway, this rule provides expedited voting for proposals which some players don’t care whether is passes so don’t vote on or cast a vote of DEF and the Emperor never casts a vote.

append to Stable

As a daily action, a wizard may sell an animal which is the following atomic action:
*choose an animal in their stable
*gain food equal to its upkeep cost
*subtract food equal to the number of non-Wild qualities which don’t match the Wizard’s Underling quality
*remove that animal from their stable

Proposal: Armoured, but not Invincible

2 to 4 with 2 def after 48 hours. Failed by derrick.

Adminned at 02 Jul 2019 16:52:15 UTC

If the proposal “The Right to Bear Armour” does not pass, this proposal has no effect.

Add to the rule War:

After the text “it destroys the creature in the same slot number of each opposing force (excluding creatures which are Armoured)”, add “then if any of those creatures are Armoured, they lose the Quality Armoured”.

It seems to me that if being Armoured grants a creature invulnerability, all creatures will end up being Armoured. If their Armour gets destroyed after a deadly encounter while still allowing the creature to survive, then being Armoured would still be meaningful, but not overpowered.

Proposal: The Right to Bear Armour

8-0. Enacted by Derrick.

The top line could not be enacted because the relevant phrase did not exist.

Adminned at 01 Jul 2019 20:27:25 UTC

In Scoring, remove “or armored” from “+2 if the creature has venomous or armored”.

In War, replace “it destroys the creature in the same slot number of each opposing force” with:-

it destroys the creature in the same slot number of each opposing force (excluding creatures which are Armored)

In the rule, “Duel”, replace

Proposal: What else does “upkeep” mean?

Enacted 7 to 1 with 3 def. Enacted by Derrick.

Change the sentence in the rule “Food” that reads “(If a Wizard’s Underling Type is not blank, their increase from this is decreased by the Upkeep of their Underling Type.)” to read:

If a Wizard’s Stable is not empty, their increase from this is decreased by the total Upkeep of every Creature in their Stable. If a Wizard’s Underling Type is not blank, their increase from this is decreased by the Upkeep of their Underling Type.

I didn’t see “Staff Canteen” in time to vote against it, so I think its intent should be more fairly applied.

Add a new rule titled Abstain

Add to the list of creature Qualities:

Digging (2)
Stealthy (1)

Add to the rule “Creatures”:

creatures with one of a set of incompatible qualities may not have another quality from that set added to it.

obedient and wild are a set of incompatible qualities.
Winged and leaping are a set of incompatible qualities.
Digging and winged are a set of incompatible qualities.

In the rule “Scoring” or the rule “Strengthing”:

change :

+2 if the creature has venomous or armored

to:

+2 for each of the following the creature has: venomous, armored

change:

+1 if the creature has Fanged, Horned, Obedient, or Ferocious

To:

+1 for each of the following the creature has: Fanged, Horned, Obedient, Ferocious

Add:

*+3 if the creature has leaping and the battlefield has walled or sloped
*+3 if the creature has Digging and the battlefield has walled, sloped or underground
*+2 if the creature has Stealthy and the battlefield has forest, farflung, underground, or sloped

I swear this was sitting on my computer before I rolled up underground so many times. I wanted to roll it into a proposal that also gave bonuses for facing specific types of foes or penalties for having too many wild/ferocious creatures in an army, but I think this is big enough, and you’ll need the boost.

The First Campaign Season: Icy Caves

This is Campaign Number 1. Our battlefields are as follows:

Mushroom Mines: rich underground forest
Ice Floes: aquatic, aquatic, frozen
Ice Caves: underground, aquatic, frozen

Such terrain is difficult for regular troops to fight in. I need beasts able to conquer such terrain. Which Wizard can provide me with beasts able to conquer Sea, Ice, and cave?

Proposal: The War in the West

Popular 6 to 0, with 2 def. Enacted by Derrick.

Adminned at 28 Jun 2019 13:16:37 UTC

If there is no rule named “The War”, then create it. Change the rule named “The War” to read:

Any time there is no open campaign, the King may “Go on Campaign” as an atomic action with the following steps:
*Create three battlefields with randomly selected battle effects and names chosen by the king.
*Make a blog post listing the battlefields generated, and the campaign number, which for the first campaign is 1 and goes up by 1 for each subsequent campaign. This post is known as a campaign.

Battlefields created in this way are also added to the list of current Battlefields in rule “Battlefields”.

Any Wizard may participate in an open campaign by making a comment on the campaign in which they:
*Choose a battlefield from among those created for the campaign, and
*Submit an ordered list of 5 elements, each being either a unique creature from in their Stable, or left empty. Any creature thus listed cannot be removed from their Stable or used by the participating Wizard (such as in a duel or a campaign) until the closing of the campaign.

===Closing a Campaign===
If an open campaign has been posted for 72 hours, any Wizard may close it by making a comment on the campaign with an ordered list of five random numbers, generated as up to 2N+4, where N is the campaign number. Doing so creates a force with five creatures in the slots, of type Emu1 through Emu5, in order, each with a Score (on any battlefield) equal to the number generated for its place in the order. The force is called the Western Force, and its commander is the Armies to the West. (Any previous Western Force, with its creatures, is replaced by the new one.)

When a campaign is thus closed, one battle is created for each participating Wizard, on the battlefield they chose in participating, between a new force generated from their list submitted to this campaign (they become its commander) and the Western Force. If the Wizard becomes the Triumphant, they gain Courtly Favor equal to 5 plus the campaign number.

Regardless of their outcome, battles in the Western War are likely to have casualties. If a single creature in the Western Force has a higher Score than every other creature in that force, it destroys the creature in the same slot number of each opposing force. Creatures destroyed in this way are removed from any Stable they were in.

Fierce Emu warriors, as far as the eye can see.

Every summer, the kings ride out to battle. Every summer they strive for victory. Every summer, new horrors are unleashed.

Lets get the ball rolling on combat with the forces of the west!

Story Post: Test Duel?

I’d like to test the dueling system and see if it feels like it works as is or if it needs more tweaks to be fun and interesting. I don’t seem to be a particularly creative Wizard, so I just produced some very large beasts!

We will duel at the City Gates. All Wizards are valid judges and opponents and the King is a valid judge.

“What are you doing?” the Counselor shouted. “Those beasts are to be used in service of the king and kingdom, not to settle your petty personal squabbles!”

Proposal: More Natural Beasts

Adminned at 27 Jun 2019 23:56:21 UTC

Change:

When a Wizard Mutates a creature, they create a new creature with exactly one more or one less quality than the starting creature.

To:

As an atomic action a Wizard who can complete all of the steps may breed a creature.
#That wizard (known as the breeder) selects a creature (known as the stock) in a stable belonging to another wizard (known as the proprietor)
#creates a new creature (known as the whelp) exactly one more or one less quality than the stock
#spends food equal to the stock’s upkeep
#Adds the whelp in their stable, optionally removing a creature from their stable as normal.

remove:

A Wizard may mutate a Creature in another Wizard’s Stable by spending an amount of Food equal to that Creature’s Upkeep; the resulting Creature is added to the mutator’s own Stable.

This activity is both core to the game and currently hard to talk about without errors. I changed the wording to “Breed” to make the language easier to work with. Now we can easily modify the process, talk clearly about whether we should be paying the upkeep of the whelp or the stock, and so on.

Proposal Prereview: Alt Mysterious Egg

I reworked Farsight’s Mysterious Egg proposal in this Google Doc. Hope he doesn’t mind.

I’m wondering if it’s a good process for new proposal writing, especially if complex mechanics are involved. Try making edits to the doc if you like. Easy to use? Comments can also be added to the doc, but that might be redundant to comments here. When it looks good, then someone can actually propose it, defaulting to myself in a day or so.

While the wars outside the gates continued in their usual fashion, the struggles of the court were to develop regulations to prevent a power-hungry Wizard from misusing their magics for evil. In essence, the threat of civil war loomed loud, ... loud enough to drown out the distant cries of dying soldiers.

Immediately after a proposal containing the word “Victor” is enacted, change all instances of “Victor” to “Triumphant”. If the word ‘Triumphant’ appears in the ruleset, any admin may delete this rule

This is a call for judgement because it is time sensitive. Concern has been expressed that “Won the Cattle but not the Boar” contains a scam in it, and this is to resolve such a scam.

“Add to the rule “Creatures”:

The Mysterious Egg - if a Wizard has never had a Mysterious Egg in their Stable, then add to that Wizard’s Stable a creature called Mysterious Egg.
This creature counts as one of a Wizard’s allowance of five creatures.
This creature has a score of 0 on any battlefield.
This creature cannot be mutated.
A Wizard with a Mysterious Egg may choose to mutate a creature in another Wizard’s Stable without spending its food cost. If a Wizard chooses to do this, the Mysterious Egg hatches and is removed from that Wizard’s Stable.

Create a rule named “Court Politics”:

Each wizard has Courtly Favor, which is an integer tracked in the GNDT under “Favor”

Each wizard has zero or more court allies, tracked in a GNDT column named “Allies”. Each Court Ally has an identity (a string) and a cost (a number), and is written as [identity]([cost]). Only one wizard may have a court ally with any given identity at a time. A wizard may “associate” with a court ally by selecting an identity, spending an amount of favor greater than the cost of any court allies in the GNDT with that identity, removing any courtly allies in the GNDT with that identity, and adding to their court allies an ally with the chosen identity and a cost equal to the court favor spent.

The following are the possible identities of Court Allies:
*Queen

Proposal: Won the Cattle but not the Boar

Reached quorum 7 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 26 Jun 2019 18:27:55 UTC

If the rule “Battlefields” does not exist, this proposal has no effect.

Create a new rule, “Battle”

A battle has a battlefield and two forces. A force has a commander, which may be a Wizard, the King, or the Armies to the West. A force also has 5 creature slots numbered 1 to 5, which may be a valid creature, or empty.

The score of an occupied creature slot is determined by that creature’s score given the battle’s battlefield. An empty creature slot is given a score of 0. A force’s wins in a battle is given by the number of N in the range 1-5 such that their Nth creature slot has a higher score than the opposing force’s Nth creature slot. In the case that the forces have an equal number of wins, an additional win will be awarded to one force by way of a random DICE2 roll in the GNDT. The force that has the most wins is the battle’s victor.

Create a new rule, “Duel”

Any Wizard may announce a duel, by posting a blog entry with a title including the word “Duel”. A Wizard who announces a duel is that duel’s challenger. The challenger may further specify a list of valid opponents, defaulting to a list of all Wizards, and a list of valid judges, defaulting to a list of all Wizards and the King. Any valid opponent may become the opponent by stating such intention in a comment on the blog entry. Likewise, any valid judge may become the judge by stating such intention in a comment on the blog entry. The judge, opponent, and challenger must all be different. The challenger and opponent are the two duelists.

At the time that the judge, opponent, and challenger are all assigned, the duel begins. The duelists must submit a plan by sending a private message to the judge listing an ordered list of 5 elements, each being either a creature or left empty. Any creature listed must be in the duelist’s Stable, and no creature may be listed twice in the same duel.

If 48 hours have passed since the start of the duel and only one of the duelists has submitted a valid plan, that duelist is the victor. If 48 hours have passed and neither duelist submitted a valid plan, a victor is decided by way of a random DICE2 roll in the GNDT.

Once both players submitted a valid plan, a battle takes place. The first force is the challenger, and the second force is the opponent. Their creature slots are the lists submitted the the judge. The judge must then post a comment on the duel’s blog entry detailing the creature slots, scores, wins, and which duelist was the victor. The victor of the duel’s battle is the victor of the duel.

If “Proposal: They Are Coming” passes:

Amend Duel by appending “The challenger specifies the duel’s battlefield from the list of current battlefields. Battles conducted during this duel have the duel’s battlefield as their battlefield.” after the words “A Wizard who announces a duel is that duel’s challenger.”

If “Proposal: They Are Coming” does not pass:

Amend Duel by appending “The battlefield is randomly determined” to after “a battle takes place.”

For each Wizard, if the total Upkeep of Creatures in their Stable minus the number of Creatures in their Stable is greater than zero, reduce their Food by that amount (to a minimum of zero).

In “Stables”, replace “a creature type of an animal name chosen from https://a-z-animals.com/animals/” with :-

a creature type of an animal name chosen from the [[list of animals]].

In “Creature”, replace “Uncontrollable” with “Wild”.

Set the wiki page “List of animals” to have the content it had at 08:10 UTC on the 25th of June 2019.

Remove from all stables all creatures whose creature types do not appear on the “List of animals” wiki page.

Restricting basic animals to single words, both to save space in the GNDT and to prevent confusion (is that Horned Frog a Frog which has become Horned, or an ordinary common-or-garden Horned Frog?). This frees up the shorter word “Wild”, which the King may have been deliberately avoiding for the same reason.

Update: My first draft of this said to use the original source but ignoring multi-word animal names, but it’s probably more useful if we have a wiki page listing all valid names, which we can add or remove things from if we feel like it. (The appendix on wiki page gamestate means that I have to add another line to set its content to its now-current content, so that it doesn’t get reverted to the non-existent state it had “at the time of [this] proposal’s submission”.)

The Wandering Hat - The Wizard who holds the Hat is referred to in this rule as the Wearer. The Hat allows the Wearer to mutate a single Creature in another Wizard’s Stable without paying its Upkeep. If a Wizard chooses to use the Hat in this way, the Wizard whose Creature they mutated becomes the new Wearer. The new Wearer cannot use the Hat in the same 72 hour period as the previous Wearer.

Within the rule “Items of Power”, also add the following:

The initial holder of an Item of Power is randomly assigned by the King, using a GNDT dice roll.

I envision playing the game of mutating each other’s creatures, with several Items of Power in play, which are basically modifiers which each give a Wizard a small advantage, but which then change ownership once you’ve used them. I think this would add meaningful decisions to the game.

Also, I envision that Wizards could choose not to use their Item, in the hope they could accumulate more than one, to gain an even greater advantage, e.g. say I want to mutate one of Kevan’s creatures, and I have an Item of Power I want to use to make it easier, but if I do, Kevan will gain ownership of my Item, and he already has two of his own, but I really want to mutate his creature . . .

Proposal: Administrative Assistants Great and Small

Reached quorum 6 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 25 Jun 2019 08:36:29 UTC

If the proposal “Creatures Great and Small” has not passed, this proposal has no effect.

Create a new rule entitled “Underlings” as follows:

Each Wizard may have an Underling Type, which is tracked in the GNDT as a string which is either blank or the name of a valid creature quality from among those listed in the rule “Creature.” By default, a Wizard’s Underling Type is blank.

If the proposal “Frog Chow” has passed, add a paragraph to the rule “Underlings” as follows:

As a Weekly Action, a Wizard may set their Underling Type to any creature quality by paying Food equal to three times the absolute value of that quality’s listed Upkeep. As long as a Wizard’s Underling Type is a given quality, for that Wizard, the Upkeep of that quality is considered to be 0.

Proposal: Frog Chow

Reached quorum 8 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan. Final clause accidentally has no effect because that ruletext is in “Stables” rather than “Creature”.

Adminned at 25 Jun 2019 08:34:46 UTC

Replace “cost” with “Upkeep” throughout the dynastic ruleset.

Enact a new rule, “Food”:-

Each Wizard has an amount of Food stockpiled for their creatures, tracked in the GNDT and defaulting to zero. As a weekly action, the King may increase every Wizard’s Food by 10.

In the rule “Creature”, if it exists, replace “Once every 72 hours, a Wizard may mutate a creature in another wizard’s stable and add the resulting creature to the stable of the wizard who mutated the creature.” with:-

A Wizard may mutate a Creature in another Wizard’s Stable by spending an amount of Food equal to that Creature’s Upkeep; the resulting Creature is added to the mutator’s own Stable.

Proposal: A Variety of Arenas

Self-killed. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 25 Jun 2019 08:31:21 UTC

Create a rule named “Battlefields”:

A Battlefield has one to three randomly selected terrains

a terrains has a name, which is a string, and a list of battle effects, which are
The following are the valid terrain:
*aquatic
*walled
*desert
*frozen
*rich
*poor
*level
*sloped
*underground
*farflung
*nearby

Terrain is king in battle.

Proposal: Creatures Great and Small

Reached quorum 8 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 25 Jun 2019 08:29:24 UTC

Create a rule named “Creature”

a creature is a creature type proceeded by a list of zero or more qualities. Two creatures with the same qualities (not considering order) and creature type are the same creature. A quality may be added to a creature more than once.

When a Wizard Mutates a creature, they create a new creature with exactly one more or one less quality than the starting creature.

A quality has a name, which is a string, and a cost, which is an integer. The following is a list of all valid qualities, written as [name]([cost]):
*Giant (3)
*Winged (3)
*Fire breathing (2)
*Obedient (2)
*Leaping (2)
*Armored (2)
*Venomous (2)
*Swimming (1)
*Ferocious (1)
*Sure-footed (1)
*Swift (1)
*Horned (1)
*Fanged (1)
*Gaudy (0)
*Uncontrollable (-1)
The cost of a creature is the sum of the costs of its qualities.

Create a rule named “Stables”

Each wizard has a Stable, which is a list of up to five creatures, tracked in the GNDT as a semicolon separated list.

A wizard may not add a creature to their stable if that creature is in another wizard’s stable.

A wizard with zero creatures in their stable may create a creature with zero modifiers and a creature type of an animal name chosen from https://a-z-animals.com/animals/

When a wizard adds a creature to their stable, they may remove a creature from their stable.

Once every 72 hours, a Wizard may mutate a creature in another wizard’s stable and add the resulting creature to the stable of the wizard who mutated the creature.

What is a dragon but a giant fire breathing winged lizard?

Ascension Address: Monster Makers

The king’s court is garbed in black, for the second most important figure in the realm has died. Not the queen, nor the heir, but the Royal Wizard. For years, Garen Drakemage captured, bred, and enchanted monstrous beasts to serve in battle. The ferocious beasts have provided key victories, bringing both the realm and Garen much honor.

But now Garen Drakemage is gone, and one of his apprentices must take his place as the chief supplier of military monsters. Each must strive to prove his worth. It is a contest of both skill and leadership. In the end, one wizard will be selected as the new Royal Wizard, and given a title fitting of his new station. And with the on-going conflict in the west, the demand for war monsters is higher than ever…

Proposal: Settling Dust

Adminned at 20 Jun 2019 09:38:05 UTC

Change:

We can’t claim final civil titles until after the drop post is closed. This gives time for everyone to monitor each other and fairly score the game.

Proposal: Chopping Block

Unanimous (with a def resolved), 6-0. Enacted by pokes.

Adminned at 19 Jun 2019 11:39:03 UTC

To “Drops”, add:-

When the Supervisor makes a Drop post, the shape and composition of its Block must be determined at random.

This was suggested on Slack earlier, to avoid any disinterested kingmaking from me now that it looks like I’ll be selecting the final Block of the dynasty.

Details Details

I have little interest in present dynasty, however, I’d like to point to the unlawful taking of two Civic titles by Derrick, as I understand current rules and conditions. I also note a certain lack of an ‘if and only if’ clause which seems rather against the spirit of the game to abuse, unless you guys enjoy trifling with technicalities. (Unspecified location for now, unless you’re curious.)

Proposal: We Used to Dream of Living in a Corridor

Reaches quorum, 5-1. Enacted by pokes.

Add a Civil Title to the list in “Civil Titles”:-

* “Outpost” is a Civil Title applied to the Site which contains the fewest types of Module (and which contains at least one Module)

Doubt this will make any difference before endgame, but I’m impressed that Pokes has achieved the Cool House without using any Life Support.

Proposal: Key Words [Appendix]

Timed out 1 vote to 3. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 17 Jun 2019 07:44:48 UTC

In the Appendix, amend the first paragraph of “Keywords” to read:

A keyword is a word used in a way such that it names or refers to an entity, idea, or action useable by the Ruleset to represent or alter the Gamestate. A keyword defined by a rule supersedes the normal English usage of the word. Furthermore, a keyword defined in the Glossary supersedes that defined by a rule. (eg. A rule specifying “bananas are blue” cannot be overruled by posting a dictionary definition or a photo of a banana, and a rule specifying “every day is Sunday” will be overruled by the Glossary entry below.)

Create a subrule of “Keywords” called “Glossary,” and move the list of keywords to that subrule.

Add a word to the Glossary, whose entry shall read as follows:

;Define
:To attach meaning to a word or phrase such that it can interact with the Gamestate.

I’ve been thinking about how to clean up some things in the Laundry List, and I think I have a good solution for the Keywords item.

Edit: taking a second look at the proposed Glossary item for “define,” I’m not entirely sure I like it. I’m open to suggestions.

In the rule “Thermostat”, replace:

Increasing the Monitored Architect’s Temperature by 5 for every Power Module

with

Increasing the Monitored Architect’s Temperature by 5 for every additional Power Module beyond the first

With the current wording, a Site with one Power module has its temperature set to 20, then immediately increased to 25. With this edit, the temperature would only increase for every additional Power module after the first.

Proposal: Civil Liberties

In “Civil Titles”, replace “If a particular Civil Title applies to an Architect’s Site” with:-

If a particular Civil Title applied only to a single Architect’s Site at the time that the previous Drop Post was closed

Following on from Civil Engineering, removing the main race condition. There’s still an issue in the endgame where someone can close the last Drop and DoV before any rivals can claim Titles, should any have changed hands, but we can address that later. It’d be good to agree right now how we actually want Civil Titles to work - should (as is the case now) tied players effectively share them, or should ties be avoided?

In “Civil Titles”, replace “If a particular Civil Title applies to an Architect’s Site” with:-

If a particular Civil Title applies to a single Architect’s Site

Remove all Civil Titles held by all Architects.

Removing the race condition where two Architects can meet the requirements of a Civil Title like City Hall, and claim it back and forth from each other endlessly. I think a first-to-qualify mechanic is probably better than an earliest-in-bidding-queue one, as the latter will advantage (possibly even multiple times) whoever is lucky enough to be earlier in the queue when the dynasty ends.

Since under the current rule it’s possible for a contested Title to have gone to the player with quickest reactions to Ideal Dome enacting, this proposal also resets all Civil Titles.

To “Health and Safety Regulations”, add:-

The Civil Titles are:

Throughout that rule, replace “is a civil title held by the architect with” with:-

is a Civil Title applied to the Site with

Attempting a cleanup, building on previous fixes. Each Civil Title here has a criterion; if you alone meet it, you get that title and hold onto it until someone else can claim it (even if your Site no longer meets its criterion).

As in Settlers of Catan and other games, if I achieve a Title by having three of a thing, someone else later catching up to three won’t move the title - they’ll have to go to four. But if I claim it at three and then fall back down to two for some reason, somebody coming in at three can take it.

This is called ‘claiming’.

Add to the rule “Civic Titles”:

An Architect holds a Civil Title if their Site meets the criteria for that Title, and if they have claimed that Title.

Add to the rule “Civic Titles”:
