Proposal: Another Fix

4-2. Times out. ~~ChronosPhaenon

Adminned at 01 Mar 2012 17:55:21 UTC

In the rule “Jam Session” replace

If the Jam Session has three or more members, he shall then inform each member of that Jam Session of the style of a random other member of that Jam Session.

with

If the Jam Session has three or more members who are not Band Members, he shall then inform each member of that Jam Session who is not a Band Member of the style of a random other member of that Jam Session who is not a Band Member.

Currently its perfectly legal to join a jam session, then get added to the band, then have the jam session resolved, getting around the whole “Jamming is for not band members” rule

In rule 2.2 “A Note of Discord”, replace the text:

At the creation of this rule, every active Musician, and after that, each Musician that joins or unidles for the first time in this dynasty, will be randomly assigned a style, either Rock or Techno, and will then be notified of their style via

Then replace the text:

who has the same style as them.

with:

who has the same style as them, provided there is one.

Append the following paragraph to that rule:

Styles are secretly recorded by the Frontman.

I just realized, rule 2.2 means “every time a Musician is assigned a Style, every Musician must be notified of their style via private message by the Frontman, along with the name of another Musician who has the same style as them.”

Well obviously I did not do that in the past. I don’t think it’s really important, because I could have simply sent the same message again every time, but with the other patch proposal adding “randomly selected”, it needs fixing.

Because the Band tolerates no soloist besides the Frontman, substitute in rule 2.5.1 “Tour” for:

The Tour is considered pending until the set of Band Members changes (either by a Musician switching from Band Member to Hanger On or vice versa or by a Band Member going idle) or until it is resolved by the Frontman.

The Frontman may resolve a pending Tour at any time. When the Frontman resolves a pending Tour, one of these 4 situations will occur:

I - If there are less than two Band Members, nothing happens.

II - If there are at least two Band Members with different styles, the Frontman must decrease the Fame of the Band Member who made the Tour by one and make them a Hanger On.

III - if all Band Members have the same style and there is exactly one Band Member who is Showing Off the Frontman must increase that Band Member’s Fame by B where B is the number of Band Members.

IV - Otherwise, the Frontman must increase the Fame of each of the Band Members who is not Showing Off by C where C is the number of Band Members, divided by two, rounded up.

If either situation II or situation III occur, the frontman must reassign each Band Member a new style via the process used for new Musicians and all Band Members then become Hangers On (and thus cease to be Showing Off).

In any of the 4 cases, the Frontman must make a comment on the pending Tour as to which way he resolved it.

the text:

The Tour is considered pending until the set of Band Members changes or until it is either resolved or failed by the Frontman.

If at any time there is only one Band Member and a Tour is pending, it may be failed by the Frontman with a comment to the Tour saying so.

The Frontman may resolve a pending Tour at any time, provided there are at least two Band Members. When the Frontman resolves a pending Tour, one of these three situations will occur:

I - If there are at least two Band Members with different styles, the Frontman must decrease the Fame of the Band Member who made the Tour by one and make them a Hanger On.

II - If all Band Members have the same style and there is one and only one Band Member Showing Off, the Frontman must increase that Band Member’s Fame by B where B is the number of Band Members.

III - If all Band Members have the same style and either none of them is Showing Off or at least two of them are Showing Off, the Frontman must increase the Fame of every Band Member not Showing Off by C, where C is half the number of Band Members, rounded up.

When situation II or situation III occurs, each active Band Member will be randomly assigned a style, either Rock or Techno, which will replace their previous style. Each Band Member will then be notified of their style via private message by the Frontman, along with the name of another Musician, randomly selected, who has the same style as them. All Band Members then become Hangers On (and thus cease to be Showing Off).

Immediately after resolving a Tour, the Frontman must make a comment to the Tour specifying which of the three situations occurred.

“along with the name of another Musician who has the same style as them.”

“along with the name of another Musician, randomly selected, who has the same style as them.”

(The third reposting was only because I forgot to make it a Proposal.)

REPOSTING: Also fixing the wrongly matched “When situation II or III occurs, the Frontman must reassign each Band Member a new style”
And adding “random” to Musician-of-the-same-style.

Mainly fixing the one-member-Band loophole, which somehow survived until now, because the four situations were not exclusive.

Also removed “(either by a Musician switching from Band Member to Hanger On or vice versa or by a Band Member going idle)” because I feel it is potentially dangerous, since those two may not be the only way to change the set of Band Members; for instance when there is no Band Members, four Band Members are selected at random (though that’s not an issue yet since “no band member” implies one of those two has happened first).

Also slightly altered “C where C is the number of Band members, divided by two, rounded up” because of multiple parenthesizing possibilities, some of which could interfere with the Appendix’s rounding towards zero.

Still not alone + reset fixing

Repeal rule “Consonance”.

Replace the text of rule “Respect and Grievance “with:

Each musician may Respect a number of musicians and have Grievance against a number of musicians. These are tracked either as lists of names of a musicians or “-” to represent no musician, in the “Respect” and “Grievance” fields of the GNDT respectively. No such list may include the same musician’s name more than once.

The total number of musicians a musician respects and has grievance against is known as that musician’s Impetus. A musician’s impetus is limited to either 2 or that musician’s fame, whichever is greater. If at any time a musician’s impetus is greater than its limit, a number of musicians must be removed from that musician’s grievance list, then from their respect list, if needed, until their Impetus equals its limit.

A musician may not respect themselves, nor have a grievance against themselves. Musicians default to respecting nobody (“-”) and having a grievance against nobody. If at any time an idle musician’s name appears in any “Respect” or “Grievance” list, that name must be excluded from such list.

A Musician cannot have a grievance against someone they respect.

If a musician X respects a musician Y, X cannot have a grievance against anyone Y respects. However, if a musician M respects a musician N and has a grievance against a musician O, N is allowed to include O in N’s respect list, in which case M ceases to have a O in their grievance list.

A musician may change at any time the lists concerning who they respect and/or who they have a grievance against.

Substitute the second paragraph of rule “Assets” with:

A hanger on who possess an asset which no band member possesses may, no more than once in each 48 hour period, edit any band member’s respect list by either changing one name on that list to the name of any band member or adding the name of any band member to that list. Such edition cannot be done in any way that would violate the restrictions and limits set in rule “Respect and Grievance”.

To correct this issue, the Frontman must inform me, and anyone else in that Jam Session who was informed of Darknight’s style, if any, the style of a valid Jam Session member.

Also, if more than half the ECVs to this CfJ, contain the text PENALTY X, where X is an integer number, the Frontman will give Darkgnight a random style (which of course may be same as before) and reduce Darknight’s Fame by Y, where Y is the average, rounded down, of all Xs informed in those ECVs.

In rule “Tour”, replace “If there is not currently a pending Tour posted, and if” with “If”.

Append to rule “Fame”: “No Tour or Cover Show may be initiated while a Tour or Cover Show is pending.”

Wanted to word it as “No more than one Tour or Cover Show may be pending” but that wouldn’t cover the issue. How about “Tour and Cover Show are [generic flavour name]. No more than one [generic flavour name] may be pending at a time.”?

From rule 3.3.1: “Unless otherwise specified, game variables defined to hold numeric values can hold only non-negative integers, and any action that would set those values below zero is an illegal action unless explicitly otherwise stated in the ruleset.” Therefore, the current value of Josh’s Fame stat is illegal.

Proposal: Cover Show

5-1. Times out. ~~ChronosPhaenon

Adminned at 18 Feb 2012 10:25:49 UTC

In rule “Fame”, move the text which starts with “If there is not currently a pending Tour posted” and go to the end of that rule into a sub-rule named “Tour”.

If proposal http://blognomic.com/archive/exact_randomness_iii/ has passed, move the last paragraph of the sub-rule “Tour” so it becomes the last paragraph of the rule “In the Band”, before that rule’s sub-rules.

Move the rule “Jam Session” so it becomes a sub-rule to rule “Fame”.

In rule “Fame”, create a sub-rule named “Cover Show” which reads:

If there is not currently a pending Cover Show posted, and if none of the Cover Show made in the past 7 days (if any were made) were started while the Band Members were the same set of Musicians as they are now, then any Hanger On may start a Cover Show by making a Story Post with the title “Cover Show”. The Cover Show is considered pending until the set of Band Members changes (either by a Musician switching from Band Member to Hanger On or vice versa or by a Band Member going idle) or until it is resolved by the Frontman.

To Join a Cover Show, a Musician makes a comment to that Cover Show’s Story Post stating that they are doing so. A Musician who has started or Joined a Cover Show is a member of that Cover Show. A Musician cannot Join a Cover Show if that Cover Show has been resolved, if they are already a member of that Cover Show, if they are a Band Member or if a member of that Cover Show has a Grievance against them.

The Frontman may resolve a pending Cover Show either if it has been pending for 48 hours or if it has at least 4 members. When the Frontman resolves a pending Cover Session, one of these 3 situations will occur:

I - If there are less than 4 members in the Cover Show, each such member loses F Fame, where F equals 4 minus the number of members in the Cover Show.

II - if there at least 4 members in the Cover Show and all of them have the same style, then the following occurs, in this order:

a. the frontman must reassign each Band Member a new style via the process used for new Musicians.

b. all current Band Members become Hangers On (and thus cease to be Showing Off, if any was) and, simultaneously, all the members of the Cover Show become Band Members.

c. the frontman must increase the Fame of each of the new Band Members by C where C is the number of Band Members, divided by two, rounded up.

d. the frontman must reassign each Band Member a new style via the process used for new Musicians and all Band Members then become Hangers On.

III - Otherwise, the Frontman must decrease by one the Fame of each member of the Cover Show whose style is not the same as the Musician who started the Cover Show.

In any of the 3 cases, the frontman must make a comment on the pending Cover Show as to which way he resolved it.

The Tour is considered pending until the set of Band Members changes (either by a Musician switching from Band Member to Hanger On or vice versa or by a Band Member going idle) or until it is resolved by the Frontman.

The Frontman may resolve a pending Tour at any time. When the Frontman resolves a pending Tour, one of these 3 situations will occur:

I - If there are at least two Band Members with different styles, the Frontman must decrease the Fame of the Band Member who made the Tour by one and make them a Hanger On.

II - if all Band Members have the same style and there is exactly one Band Member who is Showing Off the Frontman must increase that Band Member’s Fame by B where B is the number of Band Members.

III - Otherwise, the Frontman must increase the Fame of each of the Band Members who is not Showing Off by C where C is the number of Band Members, divided by two, rounded up.

If either situation II or situation III occur, the frontman must reassign each Band Member a new style via the process used for new Musicians and all Band Members then become Hangers On (and thus cease to be Showing Off).

In any of the 3 cases, the Frontman must make a comment on the pending Tour as to which way he resolved it.

At any time, if the band has no members, the frontman must roll for dices I=DICEN J=DICE(N-1) K=DICE(N-2) L=DICE(N-3), where N is the number of Musicians. Then the Ith Hanger On as appears in the Current Active Player List becomes a Band Member, then the Jth Hanger On and so on, stopping if there are no Hangers On.

I’ve inverted the “otherwise” cases, to easy sorting out their conditions and remove ambiguity.

Rewrite rule Fame, so it reads:

In either case, the Frontman must make a comment on the pending Tour as to which way he resolved it.

At any time, if the band has no members, the frontman must get the result K of a roll of a DICEN, where N is the number of Hanger Ons. The Kth Hanger On as appears in the Current Active Player List becomes a Band Member. Afterwards, the frontman must repeat this process until the number of Band Members is either exactly 4 or the number of Musicians, whichever is least.

Proposal: The Jam Spreads

9-0. ~~ChronosPhaenon

Adminned at 15 Feb 2012 21:05:14 UTC

Add a new rule to the ruleset.  Call it “Jam Session” and give it the following text:

As a weekly action, each Musician may either start a Jam Session or Join an existing Jam Session.  To start a Jam Session, a Musician posts a Story Post with “Jam Session” in its title.  To Join a Jam Session, a Musician makes a comment to that Jam Session’s Story Post stating that they are doing so.  A Musician who has started or Joined a Jam Session is a member of that Jam Session.

Band Members cannot start Jam Sessions. A Musician cannot Join a Jam Session if that Jam Session has ended, if they are already a member of that Jam Session, if they are a Band Member or if a member of that Jam Session has a Grievance against them.

As soon as is practical after a Jam Session has been posted for 48 hours, the Frontman shall end that jam session by making a comment on its Story Post saying that it’s over.  If the Jam Session has three or more members, he shall then inform each member of that Jam Session of the style of a random other member of that Jam Session.

scshunt and southpointingchariot are idle.

Quorum is 7.

Makes it a game of chicken as well. If just one guy shows off, they get twice the fame and everyone else is hosed. But if someone else shows off they bounce and none of the showoffs get any fame.

Replace the text of rule 2.2 “A Note of Discord” with:

Musicians have a Style, which can be either Rock, Techno, or Classical, which will be secretly recorded by the Frontman.

At the creation of this rule, every active Musician, and after that, each Musician that joins or unidles for the first time in this dynasty, will be randomly assigned a style, either Rock or Techno.  Each Musician will then be notified of their style via private message by the Frontman, along with the name of another Musician who has the same style as them, if there is one at the time.

People start off with Rock or Techno, but could end up liking Classical better. Whenever an Harmony attempt (or whatever it’ll be named) succeeds, you have a chance to end up liking Classical, reducing your chances to make another one soon.

Wouldn’t “Whenever an Harmony Attempt succeeds, if all Musicians who are Band Members like Classical, however made the Harmony Attempt wins the game.” be a sweet victory condition?

In rule 2.4 “Respect and Grievance”, remove the text:

If all but one of the Band Members have a Grievance against the same Band Member, and no Band Members Respect that Band Member, then that Band Member becomes a Hanger On.

In rule 2.3 “In the band”, just after “Musicians may be”, insert the word “either”.

Add a new subrule to rule 2.3 “In the band”, named “The band evolves”, with the text:

If at least a Quorum of Band Members Respect the same Hanger On and no Band Members have a Grievance against that Hanger On, then that Hanger On becomes a Band Member (and ceases to be a Hanger On).
If at least a Quorum of the Band Members have a Grievance against the same Band Member, and no Band Members Respect that Band Member, then that Band Member becomes a Hanger On (and ceases to be a Band Member).

Sorry it’s been so long, I’ve been away for a while.

Here it is, with some modifications to make sure a Musician can’t be a Band Member and a Hanger On at the same time.

In the same rule, replace “If the Band does not include at least one member who owns a specific type of Asset, then any Hanger On who owns that type of Asset may chance the Respect of a Band Member to any other Band Member at any time” with:-

If a Hanger On possesses an Asset which no Band Member possesses, then that Hanger On may change the Respect of any Band Member to any other Band Member

Giving a way to gain Assets, and sharpening the wording of their usage. (Not sure if Josh meant the final “Band Member” to say “Musician” there, but that’s a different issue.)

Proposal: This Idle Love

Reached quorum 12 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan. Ais523 is idled per his request, Chronos is unidled.

Adminned at 09 Feb 2012 02:28:51 UTC

In Rule 1.2.1, replace everything from and including “An Idling Post is a post within which a Musician requests to be idled or unidled.” to the end of that rule with:-

An Admin may render a Musician Idle if that Musician has asked to become Idle in an entry or comment from the past four days, or if that Musician has not posted an entry or comment in the last seven days. In the latter case, the Admin must announce the idling in a blog post. Admins may render themselves Idle at any time. An Admin may Unidle a Musician if that Musician has asked to become Unidle in an entry or comment from the past four days, and Idle Admins may Unidle themselves at any time, unless the Musician who would be Unidled asked to become (or rendered themselves) Idle within the previous four days, and within the current dynasty.

Remove the “Idling Post” entry from the glossary.

Upon enactment of this proposal, the Musicians named ais523, Bucky, Clucky, Chronos, Phaenon, Darknight, Greytyphoon, Josh, Kevan, Cpt_Koen, Murphy, omd, PBURNS, scshunt, southpointingchariot and Spitemaster shall be set as not Idle and all other Musicians shall be set as Idle.

Our idling system used to be quite simple - you could ask an admin to idle or unidle you through a medium of your choice, and they could process that request with as much or little fanfare as they liked. In October last year a visiting Agora player was concerned that this was too informal, and proposed that we replace it with a strict system of “idling posts”, so that each idling and unidling would leave a clear and unambiguous paper trail.

In practice, this hasn’t really worked out - if a player or admin deviates slightly from procedure, their un/idle request (or, worse, an admin’s processing of it) is flat out illegal.

Following on from Clucky’s draft from a month ago, this proposal would take us back towards the older system, but requiring un/idle requests to be made as a blog post or comment somewhere. It also stops admin from being able to jokingly re-idle a player who has unidled within seven days of asking to be idled. I think these are the only real issues that ever needed fixing. (There’s a diff comparing it to our original idling rule.)

I’ve tacked on a gamestate-resetting “these players are idle, these aren’t” clause, to cover the likely eventuality that at least one idling or unidling since October was incorrectly documented.

Add a new rule to the ruleset, entitled Assets:

Each Musician may possess up to one Asset. Asset ownership is tracked in the GNDT.

If the Band does not include at least one member who owns a specific type of Asset, then any Hanger On who owns that type of Asset may chance the Respect of a Band Member to any other Band Member at any time, so long as this does not change any Musician’s Respect or Grievance to an illegal value (as set out in the rule entitled “Respect and Grievance”). A Musician may only change the Respect of one Band Member via this rule in each 48 hour period.

A list of all available Assets follows:

* Rehearsal Space
* Sweet Ride
* Uncle at a Record Label
* Groupie magnet
* Fake ID
* Home recording equipment

Musical ability is not the only thing that will get you in the band.

Not sure how asset acquisition should work.

Testing, testing, one, two, sibilance, sibilance

I request to be unidled.

Protosal: It’s all about Democracy

In rule 2.4 “Respect and Grievance”, remove the text:

If all Band Members Respect the same Hanger On and no Band Members have a Grievance against that Hanger On, then that Hanger On becomes a Band Member.
If all but one of the Band Members have a Grievance against the same Band Member, and no Band Members Respect that Band Member, then that Band Member becomes a Hanger On.

Add a new subrule to rule 2.3 “In the band”, named “The band evolves”, with the text:

If at least a Quorum of Band Members Respect the same Hanger On and no Band Members have a Grievance against that Hanger On, then that Hanger On becomes a Band Member.
If at least a Quorum of the Band Members have a Grievance against the same Band Member, and no Band Members Respect that Band Member, then that Band Member becomes a Hanger On.

I wasn’t sure if my use of the word “Quorum” would work as I thought it would, that’s why this is a protosal.

Also, I’m moving it around from rule 2.4 to rule 2.3 for cleanliness in the rules: I’m simply thinking this is more closely related to “In the band” than to “Respect and grievance”. That’s just my inner programmer/OCD talking. =P

If the rule “Harmony” exists, replace the text of that rule from and including “When the Frontman resolves a pending Harmony Attempt,” onwards with:-

When the Frontman resolves a pending Harmony Attempt:-

  • If all Band Members have the same style, the Harmony is a Success: the Frontman must increase the Harmony of each of the Band Members by one.
  • If there are two Band Members with different styles, the Harmony is a Failure: the Frontman must decrease the Harmony of the Band Member who made the Harmony Attempt by one, and must randomly select a Session Musician (if any exist) and make them a Hanger On.

In either case, the Frontman must make a comment on the pending Harmony Attempt as to which way he resolved it.

To the rule “In the Band”, add:-

A Musician’s Prestige is equal to the number of other Musicians who Respect them. If a Band Member has a higher Prestige than every other Band Member, then they are the Star. If a Band Member has the lowest (or equal lowest) Prestige of all Band Members, then they are a Session Musician.

Lessening the effects of a failed Harmony; instead of the Band being disbanded and every member having their style scrambled, they just lose one of their less popular musicians.

Add a new dynastic rule called “Harmony” and give it the following text

Each Musician has a integer stat called “Harmony” which is initially zero.

If there is not currently a pending Harmony Attempt posted, any Band Member may make a Story Post with the title “Harmony Attempt”. The Harmony Attempt is considered pending until the set of Band Members changes (either by a Musician switching from Band Member to Hanger On or vice versa or by a Band Member going idle) or until it is resolved by the Frontman. The Frontman may resolve a pending Harmony Attempt at any time. When the Frontman resolves a pending Harmony Attempt, if all Band Members have the same style, the Frontman must increase the Harmony of each of the Band Members by one. If there are two Band Members with different styles, the Frontman must decrease the Harmony of the Band Member who made the Harmony Attempt by one. In either case, the Frontman must make a comment on the pending Harmony Attempt as to which way he resolved it, then reassign each Band Member a new style via the process used for new Musicians. All Band Members then become Hangers On and four DICEN are rolled where N is the number of Musicians. For each die, if a K is rolled the Kth Musician as appears in the GNDT becomes a Band Member.

This adds a bunch more work for Koen, so completely understand if he wants to lay down the veto.

Not rewarding the poster for being right (anymore so than the rest of the band) while punishing him for being wrong was intended. Don’t want people just randomly guessing, and like the chicken idea of “Well if youre so sure we’re the same style, YOU make the post”.

Might need to tweak some of the band mechanics to easier to vote people out for this to work. If I know DK and me are rock, and Kevan knows Bucky and him are techno and we’re all in the band, no one is gonna get anywhere. But at least this starts giving us some mechanics to work with. A simple majority votes to kick someone out would work.

Proposal: Not Cool Man

Can’t enact with 7 votes against and 1 for. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 02 Feb 2012 10:27:32 UTC

Create a new dynastic rule named “Boos”, and give it the text:

Every Musician has an amount of Boos, a nonnegative integer tracked in the GNDT that defaults to 0.

Each Musician has a list of names tracked in a GNDT column named “Targets.”

A Band Member may Boo another Musician if they have not cast a Booed in the last 72 hours. When a Musician Boos another Musician, they add that Musician’s name to their Targets, and increase the targeted Musician’s Boos by 1.

Remove all irrelevant information from the GNDT, and create a new column named “Boos”.

Create a new dynastic rule named “Awkwardness”, and give it the text:

Awkwardness is a nonnegative integer, tracked in the GNDT in the Frontman’s Boos field. Whenever a Musician joins Blognomic, or unidles for the first time in the dynasty, the Awkwardness is increased by 1.

When a Musician has a number of Boos greater than or equal to the Awkwardness, the Frontman may Write them Off and reveal their Style. Everytime a Musician is Written Off, the Awkwardness drops by 1.

A Musician who has been Written Off does not count as a Musician for the purpose of any other Dynastic Rule, except for the rule “Lollapalooza”

Set the Awkwardness to 12.

Create a new Dynastic Rule, named “Lollapalooza”, and give it the text:

Every Musician has a Coolness, a integer tracked in the GNDT that defaults to 0

When all Musicians who have not been Written Off are of the same style, that style becomes the Band’s Style. Every Musician of the Band’s Style then loses one Coolness for each name in their Targets of a Musician of the Band’s Style, and gains two Coolness for each name in their Targets of a Musician of the opposing style. The Musician with the most Coolness then wins the game.

Create a new GNDT column “Coolness”

My restyled mechanic for player conflict. Now only Band Members can Boo, and successfully targeting an opponent gets you two Coolness. And Coolness is now a GNDT column to avoid apparent ambiguity.

A note of discord

As per rule 2.2 “A note of discord”, every Musician has been assigned a style, and the name of one other Musician of that style.
Styles have been assigned with a 50% chance for everyone to be Rock and 50% to be Techno, as required in the Appendix, rule 3.3.1 “Numbers and Variables”.
As for “along with the name of another Musician who has the same style as them.”, the Ruleset didn’t specify the way that other member had to be picked, so I did it at random as well.
