The latest Papal Conclave has been resolved, and the white smoke released. I am named in the most Ballots on this Conclave, and have achieved victory.

If an Invasion has been pending for more than 48 hours, and its Attack Strength is greater than or equal to its Defence Strength, it may be Enacted by any Admin. The Pope’s Loyalty is changed to that of the Invading Power. If an Invasion has been pending for more than 48 hours, and cannot be Enacted, it may be Failed by any Admin.

It is my opinion that the story post “Invasion by Spain” has been resolved incorrectly, as the final vote was placed >48 hours after the post was made. At 48 hours, the attack strength was 4 (Brendan) + 1 (Kevan) + 5 (Pope is not a Roman) = 10. Defense Strength: 5 (delcooper11) x 2 (Captain General of the Church) + 8 (Thrawn, per rule Invasion) = 18.

The invasion rule is subject to exploitation by alliances with an admin (i.e. “Hey Admin, don’t admin my invasion post until it’s gotten enough votes to succeed.”)

If enacted, this CjF shall change the following in rule Invasion:

If an Invasion has been pending for more than 48 hours, and its Attack Strength is greater than or equal to its Defence Strength, it may be Enacted by any Admin. The Pope’s Loyalty is changed to that of the Invading Power. If an Invasion has been pending for more than 48 hours, and cannot be Enacted, it may be Failed by any Admin.

Add a Vice to the bulleted list in “Vices”:-

• Avaritia - A Cardinal whose Vice is Avaritia may take one Church Action without paying its Influence cost, each day, so long as no other Cardinal has a higher Influence than them.

If “Cap and Trade v2” enacted, this proposal has no further effect.

In “Benefices”, replace “As a Church Action, a Cardinal may reduce their Influence by 1 to increase their Benefices by 1.” with:-

If the total number of Benefices owned by all Cardinals is less than 50, then as a Church Action, a Cardinal may reduce their Influence by 1 to increase their Benefices by 1.

In dynastic rule Benefices, replace:

All Cardinals have Benefices, a number tracked in the GNDT. The default value is 1. As a Church Action, a Cardinal may reduce their Influence by 1 to increase their Benefices by 1. As a Church Action, a Cardinal may reduce their Benefices by 1 to increase the Benefices of another Cardinal by 1.

with:

All Cardinals have Benefices, a number tracked in the GNDT.  The default value is 1. The total number of available Benefices is 50. As a Church Action, a Cardinal may reduce their Influence by 1 to increase their Benefices by 1 given that the the action does not result in a total number of benefices greater than 50. Cardinals may trade benefices amongst themselves by making a story post to that effect, indicating as such with the title “Trade:.” Cardinals wishing to bid on the offered benefices must do so in the form of a comment on that story post.

A trade may be resolved by an admin if there is an agreement between two Cardinals as to the terms of the trade, making said changes in the GNDT. If after 48 hours there is no agreement on terms of a trade, the offer is no longer considered valid.

- The Reviser prefaces that comment with the phrase “It appears Y has made an error”, where Y is the most recent Cardinal who Ensured the Integrity of the Conclave, or if that does not exist, the Cardinal who called the Conclave. Y may not be the Cardinal who is Ensuring the Integrity of the Conclave.
- The Reviser decreases their Influence by 1 plus the number of times a Cardinal has Ensured the Integrity of the Conclave. The Reviser then increases the Influence of the cardinal Y named above by the same amount.

Change the last sentence of the first paragraph of Conclaves to the following:

The Roles for each Conclave must initially be determined randomly by the Cardinal calling the Conclave, such that no Cardinal has more than one Role in a Conclave.

All righty, if I’ve done everything right, we should now be able to use “Astral” Unicode characters, including emoji, in most places where we might possibly want to. ? Clarify the bullet point for Invidia under the rule “Vices” as follows:

A Cardinal may not choose Invidia as their Vice if they have any Benefices. As a Daily Action, a Cardinal whose Vice is Invidia may target a Cardinal who does not currently have a Vice, and set that Cardinal’s Vice to any of the options in this list. This does not count as choosing a Vice, and the Cardinal whose Vice is Invidia may not use this action to set a Vice that the targeted Cardinal would not normally be able to choose.

If “Panem Nostrum Quotidianum” has passed, replace “Daily Action” above with “Church Action.”

In the Rule Vices, add the following text to the end of the section that corresponds to Invidia:-

Upon choosing Superbia, the Cardinal gains one Benefice. Upon choosing Luxuria, the Cardinal gains one Nepotism.

Reset all Vices of all Cardinals to the default value for that stat. Remove 1 Benefice from ayesdeeef.

In the Rule Influence, add a new paragraph with the following text:-

If a Cardinal has at least 100 Influence, they are elected as Pope and have achieved Victory.

I claim that ayesdeeef’s increase in Benefices via setting other Cardinals’ Vices to Superbia is illegal.

According to the Ruleset, we have the following:

If a Cardinal has no Vice, they may set their own Vice to one of the options listed below at any time; this is called choosing a Vice.

Superbia - A Cardinal may not choose Superbia as their Vice if they are a Papabile. Upon choosing Superbia, the Cardinal gains one Benefice.

Invidia - A Cardinal may not choose Invidia as their Vice if they have any Benefices. As a Daily Action, a Cardinal whose Vice is Invidia may target a Cardinal who does not currently have a Vice, and set that Cardinal’s Vice to any of the options in this list. They may not use this action to set a Vice that the targeted Cardinal would not normally be able to choose.

In the Ruleset, “choosing a Vice” is unambiguously defined as setting their own Vice to one of the listed options at any time, if they do not have a Vice.

Because the powers invoked by Invidia do not cause the target to set their own vice, that act cannot be called “choosing”, and thus no Benefice shall be granted to either party.

If this CfJ passes, then decrease ayesdeeef’s Benefices by the number of Cardinals whose Vice ayesdeeef has set to Superbia. If ayesdeeef at any time made game actions that depend on the successful granting of Benefices when he set other Cardinal’s vices to Superbia (e.g. decreasing another Cardinal’s influence because ayesdeeef had 4 or more Benefices, bequeathing Benefices to other Cardinals, etc.), revert all of those game actions.

If a quorum of EVC’s also include the string “Tabula rasa”, reset the Vice of all Cardinals whose Vice ayesdeeef has set to Superbia to the default value.

I won’t have enough time to participate actively in the next weeks, so I guess I’m going idle for a while.

Create a new Rule titled “The Masses” with the following text:-

The Masses are a fickle lot. As a weekly communal action, any Cardinal may Mingle with the Masses by granting 3 Influence to the Cardinal in the 1DICENth row in the GNDT, where N is the number of Cardinals.

In the rule “Curia”, replace “Any Cardinal may Bid on the Appointment” with:

Any Cardinal may Bid on the Appointment if they have not already done so for that Appointment

Create a new Dynastic rule titled “Nepotism”

All Cardinals have Nepotism, a number tracked in the GNDT. It defaults to 0. As a weekly action, a Cardinal may spend 2 Benefices to gain 1 Nepotism. As a weekly action, a Cardinal may gain Influence equal to their Nepotism.

Add to the rule “Vices”, after “They may not use this action to set a Vice that the targeted Cardinal would not normally be able to choose.”

*Luxuria - A Cardinal may not choose Luxuria as their Vice if they are a Papabile or they have any Nepotism. Upon choosing Luxuria, the Cardinal gains one Nepotism.

This dynasty has too many daily actions (already!) that need to be performed every day in order to be in the best position to win it (because they can be traded for other people’s dailies).

As such, attempting to win it would be really bad for my personal life (I can’t make time to daily every day), especially as the order in which the actions matters for agreement/trust purposes. Thus, please idle me.

In “Conclaves”, add a third paragraph:-

If a Conclave is more than 96 hours old and a Cardinal has not posted a Ballot on it, then any Infirmarii with at least 1 Influence may - as a daily action - post a Ballot on that Cardinal’s behalf by paying 1 Influence and posting a comment on that Conclave consisting of the phrase “X is unwell, but elects as Supreme Pontiff Y.”, where X is the name of the Cardinal in question and Y is the name of any Cardinal.

Create a new rule titled “Curia”

Each Cardinal may have an Office, which is tracked in the GNDT. Cardinals default to having no Office. The Pope may not have an Office.

As a communal weekly action, a Cardinal may Appoint an office by posting an entry naming that Office. Any Cardinal may Bid on the Appointment by spending 1 Influence and posting a comment to that entry including the phrase “Bid: X” where X is the name of a Cardinal. After 48 hours, the Cardinal named in the most Bids wins the Office. If there is a tie, the Pope may select a Cardinal involved in that tie to win the Office by posting a comment declaring that they do so.
When a Cardinal wins an Office, their Office is set to that Office, and any other Cardinal with that Office loses it.

The Offices are
* Dean of the Sacred College. Whenever the Dean of the Sacred College makes a Speech, they gain 1 Influence.
* Chancellor. As a daily action, the Chancellor may increase the Benefices of another Cardinal by 1.

Create a new Dynastic rule titled “Loyalty”

Each Cardinal has a Loyalty, tracked in the GNDT. The default value is None
Possible values for Loyalty are:

* None
* Colonna
* Orsini
* Florence
* Naples
* Venice
* France
* Spain

A Cardinal whose Loyalty is Colonna or Orsini is a Roman. A Cardinal whose Loyalty is France or Spain is a Foreigner.

As a weekly action, a Cardinal may change their Loyalty. If their Loyalty was not None, their Influence is halved.

QUID PRO QUO

Add a new rule to the ruleset, Greed:

The Cardinal named Josh has achieved Victory.

If the Cardinal named Josh declares Victory based on the authority of this rule, and that Declaration of Victory is successful, then a new dynasty begins immediately, they may not post an Ascension Address, and no dynastic rules except this one are repealed.

Create a new rule called “Vices” as follows:

Each Cardinal may have a Vice, which is tracked in the GNDT. Cardinals default to having no Vice. Some Vices allow the Cardinal to take actions that are otherwise not permitted, and some have restrictions on when a Cardinal may select them, or what other actions they can take. If a Cardinal has no Vice, they may set their own Vice to one of the options listed below at any time; this is called choosing a Vice.

• Superbia - A Cardinal may not choose Superbia as their Vice if they are a Papabile. Upon choosing Superbia, the Cardinal gains one Benefice.
• Acedia - A Cardinal whose Vice is Acedia may not make Speeches. Should another Cardinal make a Speech that would increase the Influence of a Cardinal whose Vice is Acedia, the Cardinal with Acedia gains 2 Influence thereby, instead of 1.
• Invidia - A Cardinal may not choose Invidia as their Vice if they have any Benefices. As a Daily Action, a Cardinal whose Vice is Invidia may target a Cardinal who does not currently have a Vice, and set that Cardinal’s Vice to any of the options in this list. They may not use this action to set a Vice that the targeted Cardinal would not normally be able to choose.

As a Daily Action, if a Cardinal has not set their Vice within the last 24 hours, they may spend one Benefice to remove their current Vice.

Looks like the upgrade took place without a hitch, at about 8:30 UTC Thursday morning. Be sure to report weirdness, and I’ll see if I can upgrade our database to accept supplemental Unicode characters this weekend.

Enact a new rule, “Conclaves”:

A Cardinal may call a Conclave if no unresolved Conclave exists, by making a blog post to this effect. To be legal, a Conclave must name a number of Roles: X Scrutineers, X Infirmarii and X Revisers, where X is one third of the number of Cardinals, rounded down. The Roles for each Conclave must be determined randomly by the Cardinal calling the Conclave, such that no Cardinal has more than one Role in a Conclave.

If a Cardinal has posted a comment on a Conclave which consists of the single phrase “I elect as Supreme Pontiff X.”, where X is the name of a Cardinal other than themselves, and has posted no other comments of that format on that Conclave, then the comment is considered to be that Cardinal’s Ballot for that Conclave, electing the named Cardinal.

In “Influence”, replace “As a daily action, a Cardinal may increase the Influence of another Cardinal by 1.” with:-

Create a new rule entitled “Buying Votes” with the following text:

If a Proposal includes the capitalized phrase “QUID PRO QUO,” it is a Paid Proposal. Upon enacting such a Proposal, the enacting admin must deduct from its creator an amount of Influence equal to the number of EVCs on that Proposal that are FOR, not including the EVC of the Cardinal who proposed it. They must then increase by one the Influence of each Cardinal with an EVC of FOR on that Proposal—again, not including the Cardinal who proposed it.

If the above actions would reduce the Proposal creator’s Influence below 0, their Influence is instead set to 0, and none of the FOR-voting Cardinals receive an increase in Influence because of it.

Do not consider this Proposal to be a Paid Proposal.

All Cardinals have Benefices, a number tracked in the GNDT. The default value is 1. As a daily action, a Cardinal may reduce their Influence by 2 to increase their Benefices by 1. As a daily action, a Cardinal by reduce their Benefices by 1 to increase the Benefices of another Cardinal by 1.

Set Thrawn’s Influence to 20 and his Benefices to 5

In truth, he is simply a compromise between bitter enemies, an old and already dying man chosen to give them time to plot and scheme in hopes of winning the tiara for themselves.

All dynastic rules are repealed. Replace “Prisoner” with “Cardinal” and “Warden” with “Pope” throughout the ruleset.

Close all currently pending Votable Matters which are not Proposals, Declarations of Victory or Calls for Judgment.

I nominate Thrawn as the new Warden.

Last night I got an email from Dreamhost notifying me that all day tomorrow, Wednesday October 7 starting at 10:00 AM Pacific time (that’s 5:00 PM UTC, I think) is a maintenance window for upgrading our databases to a new MySQL version.

The good news is that this means it will finally be possible to save and properly display emoji in submitted text.

The bad news is that there will be unspecified downtime during the day — they say no more than 10 minutes’ worth, but we all know how these things can go.

The weird news is that they’re asking everyone to limit database changes all day, citing “it will just prolong the migration” as the reason.

Obviously, the timing is impeccable, since we’re in hiatus at the moment. I personally think it will be fine to carry on as normal, but it might be a good idea to put off starting the next dynasty until Thursday, just in case.

I’m making backups of the site and databases tonight, naturally. Let me know in Slack if anything goes horribly wrong tomorrow.

If the Warden believes that a Prisoner has erroneously made a Post that should be a certain type of Votable Matter but is not, the Warden may modify that Post so that it is that type of Votable Matter, or, if they are not an admin, request that an admin do so. If the Prisoner that originally made that Post then comments voting to VETO the Votable Matter, the Warden or the admin who made the change must revert any changes made to that Post.

Add to Idle Prisoners in the Core Rules

When a prisoner is idled by their own request, any pending proposals submitted by that prisoner shall be considered self-killed.
