Incident: Lights Out

Leaning on a wall to steady himself, the chaffeur inadvertently catches his sleeve on a loose cable connector, and stumbles to the floor. He takes the wire with him, ripping a dusty trail through the plasterboard towards the top of the stairs. With a thunk, it pulls away a doorstop that was holding the basement door open, and the manor is plunged into darkness.

The Basement cannot be entered or exited for 24 hours, and the lights are out.

Proposal: Safety in Numbers

Timed out 19 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 03 Feb 2010 08:44:06 UTC

In the rule “The Safe”, if it exists, replace “The Safe has a Combination lock with 3 numbers between 1 and 1000 known only to the Executor.” with:-

The Safe has a nine-digit Combination lock determined by the Executor.

...and remove “in the right order”.

In the rule “Combination Lock”, if it exists, replace “either a hint for any of the numbers in the Combination or a hint for the order of the Combination.” with:-

of either a chain of three consecutive numbers from the Combination, or a single number of the Combination and its position. (This is determined at random.)

Upon enactment of this proposal, the Combination shall change to a nine-digit number previously determined by the Executor.

Proposing a fixed clue mechanism for the combination, rather than me giving vague “hints”.

Proposal: Guest (except me) are not stupid!

Now as a Proposal…

Proposal: This should placate Kevan.

Add a new rule, entitled ‘Late arrivals’, containing the text:

As a weekly action, any Guest who is Dead or Arrested may make a blog post announcing that they are playing a late arrival. They must then set all their statistics in the GNDT to those of a new Guest. Their former Role is no longer considered to be taken by a Guest per Rule 2.7, if the Guest was a Murderer or a Detective then they are no longer a Murderer or Detective for the purposes of the ruleset, and they are treated for all purposes of any Dynastic Rules as if they just unidled, with the following exceptions:

  • The rule ‘Silence’ applies to them with regard to any information learned before they made their Late Arrival post.
  • If they were Dead before they announced that they were playing a Late Arrival, then the Spiritualist’s ability applies to them as to any other Dead Guest. The above restriction does not apply to this ability.
  • Their Degree of Relation is set to a new value that is between their previous degree of relation and 1250. This value shall be randomly chosen by the Executioner.

Replace the text ‘If the Spiritualist is in a room with a dead Guest and the lights are out, the Spiritualist may, once every 96 hours, notify the Executor that the Spiritualist is conducting a seance’ with ‘The Spiritualist may, at most once every 96 hours, notify the Executor that they are conducting a seance and give the name of a dead Guest’.

How’s that?

Incident: Attic Blocked

There is a thump from the attic as a tea chest falls from a precarious pile, blocking the single trapdoor entrance for 24 hours. Unrelatedly, the fusebox cable that the chauffeur was leaning on happens to spark for a moment, delivering a mild electric shock and flooding the basement with a sharp, pale blue light for a moment. He is entirely terrified by this.

Proposal: Something to do

Timed out 13 votes to 1. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 02 Feb 2010 01:47:04 UTC

Add a new Dynastic rule named “The Safe” as follows:

The Attic contains a hidden Safe. The Safe can be Open or Closed. It initially starts as Closed. The Safe contains a paper which has the name of the Guest who has the lowest degree of relation to Lord Cartlesham. The Safe has a Combination lock with 3 numbers between 1 and 1000 known only to the Executor. Any Guest present in the Attic who believes that they know the combination may privately inform the Executor that they wish to Open the Safe and provide the Combination in the right order. This action cannot be performed more than once daily. Executor shall provide the first Guest wishing to open the Safe with the correct Combination the information contained in the Safe and change the state of the Safe to Open.

Add a sub-rule named “Combination Lock” to the rule “Safe” as follows:

The numbers for the Combination to the Safe are hidden somewhere in the Lounge. If the state of the Safe is Closed, as a weekly action, a Guest in the Lounge may inform the Executor that they wish to search the Lounge for clues for the Combination. The Executor shall then inform all Guests in the Lounge either a hint for any of the numbers in the Combination or a hint for the order of the Combination.

Add a sub-rule named “Closing the Safe” to the rule “Safe” as follows:

If the state of the Safe is Open, then the Executor may change the state of the Safe to Closed by choosing a new Combination and making a blogpost to that effect. The Safe shall contain the name of the Guest who has the lowest degree of relation to Lord Cartlesham amongst all the Guests who are not Arrested or Dead at the time when the Safe was Closed.

Upon enactment of this Proposal, the Executor shall choose a Combination for the Safe and store the name of the Guest, who has the lowest degree of relation to Lord Cartlesham amongst all the Guests who are not Arrested or Dead at the time of enactment, in the Safe.

Add something to do for guests who are not murders or detectives. The intention is that the name of the Guest who will be the Heir per Rule 2.11 is stored in the Safe and when the Safe is opened this information may become public (if the Guest who opened the Safe wants it to) and then the rest of the Guests can take some action on that information.

Proposal: Re-doing it

Self-killed -Darth

Adminned at 31 Jan 2010 21:34:07 UTC

Problems fixed. I change the text in the list of role abilities because a) if dead people are coming back to life, then it’s tough tracking their location, and b) it’s not really in-theme to have the Spiritualist only able to talk to the dead unless they’re in the same room with their corpse. Also added a qualification to prevent the Spiritualist from being able to supernaturally talk to Arrested people.

Proposal: Attack of the Non-Native Speakers

Self-killed -Darth

Adminned at 31 Jan 2010 21:33:42 UTC

Change the text:

A typographical mistake is defined as “A mistake in printing, typesetting, or typing, especially one caused by striking an incorrect key on a keyboard.”

to:

A typographical mistake is defined as “A mistake in printing, typesetting, typing, or grammar, especially one caused by striking an incorrect key on a keyboard.”

We have quite a few non-native speakers of English on BlogNomic: arthexis, Alzhaid, Roujo, Keba, Put, and NonnaNaz are examples whom I know of. Some are good enough at English to fool even a native speaker; others are not. I think admins should be able to correct grammatical mistakes along with other mistakes, so that the game isn’t biased towards native speakers.

Guests are not stupid

Add

The Executor must privately, notify the Guest, who has repaired the Fusebox, that he did so.

to the “Repair the fusebox.” paragraph of Rule 2.6 entitled “Lights”.

As “Who turns the ligtht on?” failed… Normally, you know when you repair a Fusebox ;)

De-Idle

Deidle me please. Any roles left for me? :D

New Guest

So yeah I’d like to join, quick question first, is the whole roleplaying thing essential or simply recommended?

A New Arrival

Someone knocks my door, waking me up from my bed. One couple of seconds later, an envelope slips through the half-inch bottom of the door.
I open it, reading:

You are formally invited to attend an evening at Cartlesham Manor [...]

I look at the clock. It’s late, but maybe not to late to arrive just in time.

Hi to all!
I request to become player of this Dynasty of Nomic, please.

Incident: Lights Out

Perhaps someone lifted the wrong book from the shelf, perhaps the manor’s hidden security systems have become damaged by the storm, but for some reason the library doors have just sealed themselves shut, and the lights have gone out across all floors.

The Library may not be entered or exited for 24 hours.

I got this email from Kevan:

Proposal: Schrödinger’s Corpse

Timed out 14 votes to 1. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 31 Jan 2010 04:53:01 UTC

Replace the “If a Guest is Missing” bullet point in Rule 2.2 (Life and Death) with:-

If a Guest is Missing, they cannot become anything other than Missing, except through the Rule “Turning Up”.

If the proposal “I’m back” passed, add the following to the start of the Rule “Turning Up” (if it didn’t pass, create a new rule “Turning Up” with the following text):-

If a Guest is Missing, their Location becomes “?”, which is a valid Location, but not a Room. Two Missing guests are not considered to be in the same Room.

A Missing guest has an Actual State, tracked privately by the Executor. Their Actual State may be Healthy, Stunned, Wounded, Poisoned, Restrained, Terrified, Asleep, or Dead.

To the list of actions in Rule 2.6, add:-

  • Hide. Upon taking this Action, the hiding Guest becomes Missing and their Actual State becomes their health state prior to becoming Missing.
  • Conceal a named Guest (known as the Target) that they share a room with. Upon taking this Action, if the Target is present in the same room as the Guest concealing them and the Target has become Dead or Restrained since the lights last went out, then the Target becomes Missing and their Actual State becomes their health state prior to becoming Missing.

In Rule 2.12 (Silence), replace “If a Guest is Dead or Arrested” with:-

If a Guest is Dead, Missing or Arrested

In Rule 2.11 (The Reading of the Will), replace “For the purposes of this rule, Guests who are Dead or Arrested have 1000 added to their degree of relation.” with:-

For the purposes of this rule, Guests who are Dead, Missing or Arrested have 1000 added to their degree of relation.

Trying out a mechanic to enable Guests to go Missing - they can either hide when the lights are out, or have their body concealed if they’ve been recently killed or handcuffed. Being Hidden means that you can’t talk to other players, so if a Guest is killed and has their body concealed, they won’t even know themselves whether they’ve been murdered or restrained, until they return to play. (And if a Guest chooses to hide, they can’t then tell everyone that it’s okay, they’re just hiding. They can tell them before, but if the murderer overhears that…)

Minor waterproofing: Old bodies intentionally can’t be hidden, as hiding a body stops it from being able to communicate with other dead Guests. Missing Guests also get +1000 relation for the reading of the will, to prevent hiding from being a no-brainer cloaking device to avoid being murdered.

Incident: Rain and Terror

A storm is gathering outside, and the French windows in the lounge crash open, rain and wind pouring in. The only door to the lounge swings shut and locks itself, and Roujo - who was in the armchair next to it in the study - leaps out to his feet and stumbles wildly across the room.

The Lounge is now out of bounds for 24 hours, and Roujo becomes Terrified.

Proposal: I’m back

Enacted 11-1 by Thrawn

If the Rule “Turning Up” exists, this Proposal does nothing.
Add to the end of

# If a Guest is Missing, his location becomes “?”. Two Missing guests are not considered to be in the same room.

in the rule “Life and Death”

A Missing guest has an Actual State, tracked privately by the Executor. Their Actual State may be Healthy, Stunned, Wounded, Poisoned, Restrained, Terrified, Asleep, or Dead.

Add a new rule, “Turning Up”:

As a weekly action, if the lights are on a Missing guest may roll D3 in the GNDT. If they roll a 1, they may send a PM to the Executor asking to change their Status to their Actual State. The new location of the guest is set by the Executor.

Proposal: Simultaneous action

Self-killed -Darth

Adminned at 30 Jan 2010 21:39:49 UTC

If the Executor’s last vote on this proposal is not AGAINST, change the paragraph immediately following the list of Dark Actions in rule 2.6 “Lights” to:

If the Lights are Off and the Executor has any Dark Lists in his email inbox with at least one unprocessed Action which were sent since the Lights last went Off and whose sender is not Dormant, he may select one of these Lists at random and process the first Action on it that has not yet been processed. Murderers and Detectives may designate up to three of their Actions to be processed as one Action. The Executor may not process a Dark List within the first twelve hours after the Lights go Off.

The first bit is to allow Kevan to vote this down single-handedly if he feels it would be too much work. That way the rest of us don’t have to take that into consideration when voting.

I know there’s been concern about Murderers and Detectives having too many special powers, while the rest of you have none, but this one is necessary so they can still move to another room, attack someone, and move back without someone turning on the lights and exposing them. It’s limited to three actions so they can still move two floors to attack and return, or attack two people (one wound and one kill) and move back, but they risk getting caught.

Proposal: The father you never knew

Times out 12-7 - Darth

Create a subrule of rule 2.5 Bloodlines entitled “Illegitimate Child” which reads:

One of the Guests may be Lord Cartlesham’s illegitimate child. The identity of the illegitimate child is not tracked publicly, and is initially known only by the Executor. For the purposes of determining who will become Heir, the illegitimate child’s degree of relation is 1.

If at any point there is no illegitimate child, the Executor may privately select a random Guest from the third of Guests (rounded up) with the highest degree of relation to be the illegitimate child.

Add to rule 2.5.1 Genealogy:

As a weekly action, if a non-Dormant Guest is alone in the Attic and the Lights are On, they may privately notify the Executor they are searching through Lord Cartlesham’s old things. The Executor must then secretly chose a random whole number between 1 and 20 using a method of his choice. If the number chosen is 1, the Executor shall privately notify them of the identity of the illegitimate child.

Change “the Executor may privately assign a randomly-selected degree to that Guest” in rule 2.5 Bloodline to read “the Executor may privately assign a randomly-selected degree greater than 1 to that Guest”.

If there is a Guest with a degree of relation of 1 or two or more Guests with consecutive degrees of relation the lowest of which is 1, add 1 to all of their degrees of relation.

Proposal: Because Mafia is less fun over a period of two months

Self-killed. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 30 Jan 2010 11:43:12 UTC

Add a new rule, entitled ‘Late arrivals’, containing the text:

As a weekly action, any Guest who is Dead or Arrested may make a blog post announcing that they are playing a late arrival. They must then set all their statistics in the GNDT to those of a new Guest. Their former Role is no longer considered to be taken by a Guest per Rule 2.7, if the Guest was a Murderer or a Detective then they are no longer a Murderer or Detective with respect to Rule 2.4 paragraph 2, and they are treated for all purposes of any Dynastic Rules as if they just unidled, with the following exceptions:

  • The rule ‘Silence’ applies to them with regard to any information learned before they made their Late Arrival post.
  • The Spiritualist’s ability applies to them as to any other Dead Guest. The above restriction does not apply to this ability.

If the proposal ‘Rest in Peace’ failed, then remove the first item in the list and the second sentence of the second item in the list.

An attempt at coming back to life, with minimal breakage. Sort of breaks the Mafia theme, but as the title points out, Mafia, with its permanent-real-death as a game mechanic, is less fun when there’s only one game that lasts two months. I attempted to avoid breaking the other rules or providing any loopholes; the idea is that the ‘old’ persona remains intact, at least as much as a permanently-Dormant Guest has a persona, and the person who reincarnates simply starts playing a new one as well. If anyone has any specific problems with this, then please let me know and I will repropose.

Proposal: Retroactive Continuity(?)

Can’t reach quorum with 15 votes against. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 30 Jan 2010 11:42:45 UTC

Create a new rule entitled “I’m Not Dead Yet!” which reads as follows:

As a weekly action, the detective may ask the Executor to roll a DICEX with the comment “Grave Digging”, where X is equal to the number of player who have a health state of “Dead” plus one. If the result is a one, the Detective accidentally exposes himself and his identity is revealed (by the Executor) to the Guests in a story post as soon as the Executor is able to do so. Otherwise, the Dead Guest whose name, when put in an alphabetical list with the other Dead Guests, corresponds to the number given by the dice roll (2 corresponding to the the first person on the list, 3 to the second person, and so on) has his health state set to “wounded” and has his location set to the Parlor. The Executor then must make a story post as soon as he is able to stating that the guest has been found by the detective and actually only appeared dead for any reason which the Executor may choose.

If a quorum of the EVCs on this proposal contain the phrase “Cop Out”, then change “As a weekly action” to “Twice per week” in the above text.

Maybe I do check my mail often enough

If a Detective becomes Dead or Wounded as a result of a Dark Action taken by a Murderer, that Murderer shall be privately told that their victim was a Detective, and may seal letters with a Detective Seal for the remainder of the game.

Giving the Detectives an ability, and a possible vulnerability.

1. The guest becomes Healthy and is moved to the Basement.
2. The guest becomes Healthy and is moved to the Bathroom.
3. The guest becomes Healthy and is moved to the Library.
4. The guest becomes Healthy and is moved to the Attic.

Enact a new Rule, “Silence”:-

If a Guest is Dead or Arrested, they may not reveal any information that they learned, deduced, or otherwise acquired about another Guest, or any in-game information about themselves that had not previously been revealed. This includes, but is not limited to, whether or not he or another Guest is a Murderer; what another Guest may have communicated through private conversation; or even previously-unshared logical deduction about the roles of the other Guests based on the circumstances of the game.

These restrictions do not apply to communication among the group of Dead Guests and Arrested Guests, or to any information contained in the current state of the GNDT.

Reusing the full “dead players can’t share previously-unrevealed game information with living ones” rule from the Werewolf Dynasty, if people want it. It was a little strange to see players interrogating the corpse of the journalist (“So, did you gather any information before you died?”) on IRC yesterday.

Dark Lists

Just a reminder to players that Dark Lists must explicitly be submitted via email, under Rule 2.6 (“a non-Dormant Guest may email the Executor with a list of at most five Dark Actions [...] if the Executor has any unprocessed Dark Lists in his email inbox”). Those sent as private messages through ExpressionEngine will not be processed, under the current ruleset.

Create a new rule entitled “The Reading of the Will” which reads:

For the purposes of this rule, Guests who are Dead or Arrested have 1000 added to their degree of relation.

If at any time only one Guest is not Dead or Arrested, they become Heir. If there is more than one Guest who is not Dead or Arrested after midnight on March 1st, 2010 the Executor shall make a post at his earliest convenience declaring the Guest who has the lowest degree of relation to be the Heir. As long as a Guest is the Heir they have achieved victory, but they may refuse their inheritance by saying they do so in a post or by failing to make a Declaration of Victory within 96 hours of becoming Heir. When an Heir refuses their inheritance or becomes Dead or Arrested, they cease to be Heir, and the Executor shall make a post declaring the Guest who has the lowest degree of relation among the Guests who have not previously refused their inheritance to be the new Heir.

Adding 1000 to the DoR of dead/arrested guests means that if no living, unarrested guest declares victory, the closest related of the dead/arrested guests is now heir. March 1st seemed far enough away to let the dynasty play out interestingly. It can always be moved closer or further back by proposal.

Add a dynastic rule entitled “Victory conditions” as follows:

* No Guest who is Dead may declare victory.

* A Guest who is a Murderer may declare victory at any time when all of the following conditions are concurrently satisfied:
(1) all other Guests having a lower degree of relation to Lord Cartlesham are Dead, Arrested, Poisoned or Terrified, and
(2) the Guest in question is not Dormant, and
(3) the lights are on, and
(4) the Guest in question has posted a blog post stating that the Guest in question believes that he has inherited Lord Cartlesham’s estate by virtue of this clause, and the Executor has posted a comment to such blog post confirming that the Guest in question has inherited the estate.

* A Guest who is a Detective may declare victory at any time when all of the following conditions are concurrently satisfied:
(1) all Murderers are Dead, Arrested or Poisoned, and
(2) the Guest in question is not Dormant, and
(3) the lights are on, and
(4) the Guest in question has posted a blog post stating that the Guest in question is a Detective, and stating his belief that all of the Murderers have been Arrested or are Dead, and the Executor has posted a comment to such blog post confirming that such statements are accurate, and
(5) such Guest has neither proposed a Crisis nor voted in favor of a Crisis that, in either case, resulted in any Guest who was not a Murderer becoming Dead or Arrested.  If two or more Detectives satisfy all of the foregoing requirements to declare victory but for this sentence, then only the first of the Detectives to post the blog post referenced in subclause (4) of the preceding sentence may declare victory.

* Any Guest may declare victory at any time when all of the following conditions are concurrently satisfied:
(1) all other Guests having a lower degree of relation to Lord Cartlesham are Dead or Arrested,
(2) the Guest in question is not Dormant,
(3) the lights are on,
(4) the Guest in question has posted a blog post stating that the Guest in question believes that he will inherit Lord Cartlesham’s estate in 96 hours time by virtue of this clause,
(5) at least 96 hours after the blog post referenced in subclause (4) has been posted, the Executor has posted a blog post confirming that the Guest in question has inherited the estate, and
(6) the Guest in question was in the Library when the blog post described in subclause (4) was posted, and was in the Library when the confirmatory blog post described in subclause (5) was posted.

I always forget to check my mail…

Seems like we got a letter from the detective. About two days ago. Not really sure why the others would stay quiet about it (unless just because it’s more information for only us), but anyways, here it is.

The following message arrived in the Master Bedroom, sent with a Detective’s
Seal.

===

Greetings ladies and gentlemen,

I am a Scotland Yard detective investigating the unfortunate case of Lord
Cartlesham’s murder. I am fairly certain that alethiophile is one of the
murderers, but due to the circumstances around Ienpw’s recent injury, I am
lead to believe that there is another murderer lurking among us. I have
disguised myself as a guest here at Cartlesham Manor in order to find out
the murderers and bring them to justice.

I have set up a secret communication system whereby you may communicate
with me without knowing who I am; you can use it by emailing me at
.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). To further our common cause to have the
murderers brought to justice, please message me any information you might
have. If you are willing, I also might ask you to use your abilities to help
set up a trap or some such thing, it would be helpful if you acknowledged
your willingness to do so.

Also, if any of you are the other detective, let me know so that we can
work together. Although I would understand if you would prefer to remain
anonymous for now.

Be aware that if you don’t cooperate with me, you will arouse my suspicion.
Don’t take offense, it’s just the nature of the job.

As to who I am… I’m afraid I can’t tell you that right now.

Your friend,
The Scotland Yard detective.

Oh yeah, this letter made me wonder… do we have to roleplay? Never got to ask that question in the last Djinasty…
By the way, if we three in the Master bedroom would just conspirate, we could post any letters like this. I believe those of you who care might want to come here, more people means better odds of truth.

Proposal: Restrain Your Enthusiasm

Reached quorum 15 votes to 1. Enacted by Kevan.

In Rule 2.2, replace “Terrified, Asleep” with “Terrified, Arrested, Asleep” in both places where it appears.

To the first bulleted list in Rule 2.2, add:-

  • If a Guest is Arrested, they cannot become anything other than Arrested.

To the list of actions in Rule 2.6, add:-

  • Free a named Guest (known as the Target) that they share a room with. Upon taking this Action, if the Target is present in the same room as the Guest freeing them, if there are fewer than two non-Dormant Guests in that room (not including the Guest taking the freeing action), and if the Target is Restrained, the Target becomes Healthy.

Add a subrule to Rule 2.4, called “Arrest”:-

If a Guest becomes Arrested, they are removed from the house for police questioning. Their Location value becomes “Cell” (this is a valid Location, but does not count as a Room).

The police have only a limited amount of cells and patience. If four Guests have become Arrested during the course of the game, further Guests may not become Arrested.

If a rule “Deathly Quiet” exists, replace “if their Status is currently Dead” with “if their Status is currently Dead or Arrested”.

Straight reproposal of Loosening the Restraints, fixed so that you can only perform the Freeing action on Guests who are actually Restrained.

Incident: Lights Out

A loose lighting cable knocked half out of its socket by the stumbling gardener finally sparks and burns through, plunging the attic and every other room into darkness.

Proposal: And a suggestion

Reached quorum 15 votes to 1. Enacted by Kevan.

If the Proposal titled “Expanding incidents” failed, this proposal does nothing.

In rule 2.9 “Incidents”, replace the following:

He does this by randomly selecting an item from the following list, updating the gamestate as specified, and posting a blog entry announcing its occurrence.

by the following:

He does this by randomly selecting two items from the following list (in whatever manner deemed suitable by him), updating the gamestate as specified, and posting a blog entry announcing its occurrence.

Also, remove the item numbered as three (3) of the list of possible incidents found in rule 2.9 “Incidents”. Then change the item numbered as four (4) in said list to make it the item numbered as three (3).

This is to add the possibility of both the lights going off /and/ a room becoming jammed.

Because lights and random injury are kind of boring on their own.

The current “Restrained” state doesn’t come at much cost, and is easily reversible if the guests apologetically decide they were wrong. This ramps things up so that if people think they’ve caught a Murderer, they have to choose between restraining them and going to the effort of maintaining a two-person guard on them (to stop a sympathiser or accomplice from untying them in the dark), and actually having them arrested and removed from the premises.

(You can, of course, also just hold a Crisis to kill your suspect, but I thought having them Arrested - with much the same effect - would be more appropriate.)

Create a new rule called “Deathly Quiet” with the following text:

A Guest is not allowed to create, or respond to, any story posts that discusses which Guests may or may not be the Murderers or Detectives if their Status is currently Dead. This rule does not prevent a Guest from voting on a proposal.

Add the following to the end of the function of the roles called “Vicar” and “Spiritualist”:

As a weekly action, the Vicar and/or the Spiritualist may make a story post asking two questions to one named Guest whose Status is currently Dead. The Guest can only answer with the following: Yes or No

Lets try again lol. Dropped the rider, added that dead guests can still vote but can’t make or comment on story posts involving trying to figure out whos a murderer and so on.

If half of all EVCs contain the word “Sush”, then disallow comments to be posted in any post made by a Guest whose Status is currently Dead that was made before this Proposal was enacted.

I think its abit unfair to have guests that are dead still be able to freely discuss who might be a murderer. This way they can channel their thoughts out without pulling a *I only died in the game, I can still talk* scam, more so if a VC comes up that centers on if the murderers kill everyone first.

Possible murderer

I have believe that Roujo is a murderer.

Take a look at the GNDT. Roujo is the only person who certainly submitted a Dark List. The only other one we know happened for sure is whoever repaired the fusebox. Time for a Crisis?

Add the following to the same rule:

If the Lights are Off and the Executor has no unprocessed Dark Lists and has received no Dark List in the past 24 hours, they may make a post stating that the Lights remain Off. This is treated as a new instance of the Lights going Off.

In that Rule, change “The Executor may not process a Dark List within twelve hours of the Lights going out.” to “The Executor may not process a Dark List within the first twelve hours after the Lights go Off.”

He shall then inform the sender of that list that his list has been processed”.

The Cook calls out from the kitchen:

“Order up!  Reheated powers on roles, patch the prof, hold the jeweler.”

Part 1:
Remove “Laborer” from the list of valid Roles in the ruleset.

Part 2:
Add the following text to “Functions of Roles” (with the entry for each Role in that subrule, including the new ones added by operation of this proposal, being alphabetized for easy reference):

Athlete.  The Athlete has a remarkable facility to recover from injury.  If at any time the Athlete becomes Wounded, the Athlete may change his state from Wounded to Asleep.

Gangster.  The Gangster is a notorious break-in artist.  The Gangster, if not Dormant, may ignore any prohibition on entering a particular Room that would otherwise be applicable as a result of a Crisis or the exercise of another Role’s special power by operation of the “Functions of Roles” subrule.

Professor.  The Professor has made a career out of formulating and testing hypotheses.  As a weekly action, the Professor may contact the Executor by telegram, stating that he is theorizing. Such telegram shall contain exactly one declarative statement with respect to no more than one Guest (such as “Guest X has the lowest absolute relation to Lord Cartlesham”, or “Guest X performed the attack that wounded a guest in the Library last night”) to which the Executor shall privately reply by repeating the declarative statement and including one of the words “TRUE”, “FALSE”, and “UNANSWERABLE”.  Such TRUE or FALSE reply by the Executor shall be an accurate characterization of the truth or falsity of the statement 66% of the time (with the Executor determining the outcome of this percentage in whatever manner the Executor deems suitable). An UNANSWERABLE reply by the Executor shall be a characterization of the statement as paradox, requiring action from the Executor beyond replying TRUE or FALSE, requiring knowledge of future events, or otherwise not classifiable as true or false to the best of the Executor’s abilities.

Curator.  The curator is a careful observer of his surroundings.  If the Curator is in a particular room when the lights were switched from on to off, and is in that same room the next time the lights are switched from off to on, the Executor shall privately notify the Curator whether any Dark Actions took place in that room while the lights were off (whether or not any Noise was heard).  The Executor shall, with respect to any such Dark Action, also provide information to the Curator as to the identity of the Guest whom the Curator suspects of having taken that Dark Action; in that case, there is a 50% chance that the information provided by the Executor will be accurate and a 50% chance that the information will be false.

Inventor.  The Inventor is a genius capable of constructing useful items.  As a weekly action, the Inventor may contact the Executor by private telegram, stating that he is inventing, and stating with as much specificity as possible the attributes of the invention that he wishes to create.  Following the receipt of that private telegram, the Executor shall determine whether or not the attempt to invent was successful (with success occurring on 50% of invention attempts, and the Executor determining the outcome of this percentage in whatever manner the Executor deems suitable.  If the Executor determines that the invention attempt was successful, the Executor shall post a blog post specifying the gamestate effects of the existence of the invention and, if applicable, the rooms and/or Guests (or the manner of determining the rooms and or Guests) experience such gamestate effects; such gamestate effects shall be determined by the Executor in his sole and absolute discretion, with the Executor being encouraged to refer to the Inventor’s telegram for guidance.  No Invention may change or alter the effect of any Core Rule.

Housewife.  The Housewife has a voracious appetite for gossip. Once every 48 hours, the Housewife may contact the Executor by private telegram, stating that she is gossiping. Folowing the receipt of that private telegram, the Executor must privately truthfully reply to the Housewife, naming two Guests specified by the Executor in the Executor’s discretion and stating which of them has the lower degree of relation to Lord Cartlesham.

Chauffeur.  The Chauffeur’s job is personal transportation.  As a daily action, and whether or not the lights are on, if the Chauffeur is in “Room A” and is not prohibited from voluntarily moving to “Room B”, the Chauffeur may move from Room A to Room B and may simultaneously change the location of exactly one other Guest who is in Room A to Room B (even if that other Guest is Dormant or is otherwise prohibited from moving to Room B).

Musician.  The Musician has uncommonly keen hearing.  If the Musician is in a particular Room and a Dark Action occurs in or with respect to that Room that may make a noise, then the Musician hears that noise; additionally, in that event, the Executor shall provide information to the Musician as to what Guest the Musician suspects of having taken the Dark Action that made that noise; this information is accurate 50% of the time (with the Executor determining the outcome of this percentage in whatever manner the Executor deems suitable).

Spiritualist.  The Spiritualist has the astonishing facility to speak with the dead.  If the Spiritualist is in a room with a dead Guest and the lights are out, the Spiritualist may, once every 96 hours, notify the Executor that the Spiritualist is conducting a seance, whereupon: (1) the Executor shall privately notify the dead Guest that the Spiritualist is trying to contact him from beyond the veil, and requesting that the dead Guest deliver a message to notify the Executor what information, if any, the dead Guest chooses to deliver to the Spiritualist.  The Executor may, in his discretion, provide to the dead Guest true or false information regarding the circumstances of the dead Guest’s death, which the dead Guest may incorporate or omit from the dead Guest’s reply to the Spiritualist, as he chooses,  (2) the Executor shall, promptly after receiving from the dead Guest’s message to the Spiritualist, privately communicate the same to the Spiritualist.

:

I didn’t carefully read Kevan’s veto to figure out what precisely was wrong with the old power for Jeweler (although I take him at his word that something was broken).  Rather than spend time re-thinking it, I simply omitted Jeweler this time around- perhaps he should merely be a clone of the Curator.  This is the Ornithopter-patched version of Professor.  I left out the “reinvent the inventor” part since not many people seemed to have a problem with the mechanic.

Remove “Move to another room on any floor.” from the list of the Dark Actions in the rule ‘2.6 Lights’.
Add the following entries to the list:

Move to a room on a floor above. The same as ‘Move to another room on the same floor’ except for that only Tradesmen may do this action and the room has to be a floor above them.

Move to a room on a floor below. The same as ‘Move to a room on a floor above’, except that only Gentry may do this instead of Tradesmen and the specified room has to be one floor below them instead of above.

Move to the floor with most people. The same as ‘Move to a room on a floor above’, except that only Servants may do this instead of Tradesmen and the specified room must be on the floor with the most people (according to the GNDT).

Move to the Basement. The same as ‘Move to another room on the same floor’, except for that this only succeeds in every third Dark List that has this action the Executor processes.

Return to their original room. This movement is not tracked in the GNDT, and is instead privately noted by the Executor. Only the Murderers and Detectives may do this action. They are moved to the room they were in when their Dark List was started processing. This dark action does not cause noise.

The Murderers/Detectives should think before they act so as to not give them away; but there should be ways in which they won’t be given away otherwise.
This is a possible alternative, not especially fond of it myself. Unrealistic, but hopefully interesting enough…
I think I was a bit too explicit in these, but oh well…

Wanted to give the servants a flexible movement like the others and also remove the burden.
The ‘every third’ rule is important because everyone’s going to include ‘Move to the Basement; Repair the Fusebox’... we could even make it implicit O_O ...or maybe we should make a system of Dark Actions that make it worth it to not do that all the time ....or make ‘move to the basement’ take 4 Dark Action slots, making people risk their lives. If anyone finds any of these or anything else a good enough idea, feel free to make a proposal…. I might just be a little too tired (UTC+1, around 2 o’clock)

Another Déjà vu… a chain of Déjà vu’s, none the less…
I really hope I’m in some Sci-fi/else novel/else ‘cause otherwise I might have to see a psychologist/else…

Add the following text to rule 2.6, “Lights”:

Should the Executor deem it impossible for the lights to be turned on based on the Dark Lists submitted to him, then he may consider himself a Guest (as per Rule 2.1) located in the Basement for the purposes of submitting a Dark List. This Dark List may only contain the action “Repair the fusebox”, and is processed after all other Dark Lists. After processing this Dark List, then the Executor is no longer considered a Guest for the purposes of Dynastic rules.

This should patch the loophole noted by Ornithopter.

In Rule 2.3 (Crises), replace “A Dormant Guest may not propose a Crisis or vote on one, and Quorum” with:-

A Dormant Guest may not propose a Crisis or vote on one, and while a Guest is Dormant, their vote on a pending Crisis is not counted. Quorum

To the end of the first paragraph of Rule 2.3, add:-

A pending Crisis may be enacted or failed as if it were the oldest pending proposal. If the oldest pending Proposal is a Crisis, the second-oldest pending Proposal may be enacted or failed as if it were the oldest pending Proposal.

To Rule 2.3, add:-

A Crisis may not be proposed or enacted while the Lights are Out.

In Rule 2.6 (Lights), replace “roll a four-sided die for each Guest” with:-

roll a four-sided die for each non-Dormant Guest

And replace “everyone in the room” with:-

every non-Dormant Guest in the room

In Rule 2.5.1 (Genealogy), replace “if a non-Dormant Guest is alone in the Library” with:-

if a non-Dormant Guest is alone in the Library and the Lights are On

In Rule 2.5.1 (Genealogy), replace “if a non-Dormant Guest is alone in the Study” with:-

if a non-Dormant Guest is alone in the Study and the Lights are On

In Rule 2.4, replace “Two of the Guests are Murderers” with “Two of the Guests may be Murderers” and “Two of the other Guests are undercover Detectives” with “Two of the other Guests may be undercover Detectives”.

Changing Crises so that they can be enacted or failed without regard to the proposal queue, so that a contentious proposal doesn’t get in the way of a unanimously angry mob. (They also can’t be enacted in the dark, since they’ll always involve “a solution to a physical problem within the manor”.) Also dropping Dormant Guests out of the vote entirely, rather than merely dropping them out of the quorum calculation.

This also has a few general fixes for light and dormancy, where it doesn’t make sense for a guest to be able to do something in the dark, or without full consciousness.

And oh, a microfix for “two of the guests are Murderers”, which - as Hix pointed out on IRC - isn’t strictly true, as there may be periods where one has idled and has yet to be replaced.

Public Service Announcement

Murderers and detectives who have not yet sent in a dark list should be advised Proposal: Killing and Cuffing has just been enacted, meaning they have more options available to them. They are also advised to hurry, as the lights may be turned back on at any moment. (Or they could possibly be stuck off forever if everyone sent in a dark list, and no one turned them back on. That should probably be fixed…)

In the rule “Pipe mail” change “room where the letter is sent, he may” to “Master Bedroom, he shall”.

As the rule is in the current proposal, all letters are sent to the room they’re sent from, instead of the Master Bedroom as was likely intended. This also changes a “may” to a “shall”, making letter delivery mandatory.

Murderers and Detectives are highly encouraged not to use their seals until this proposal passes.

Part 3: If more than half of the EVCs on this Proposal contain the phrase “Reinvent the inventor”, then delete the “Inventor” paragraph from Part 2.

This still leaves Diplomat, Secretary, Architect, Stonemason, Mechanic, Novelist and Bodyguard as not having defined powers, but I believe it covers the balance of the Roles that are actually held by Guests as of the time this Proposal is made.

Also, I am not going to try to pack it into this proposal, but this may be a good time to consider a mechanic analogous to this one from the prior Werewolf dynasty.

Proposal: Killing and Cuffing

Passes 19-1. -Ornithopter

Adminned at 23 Jan 2010 02:05:33 UTC

In Rule 2.6 (Lights), replace the “Attack a named Guest” bullet point with:-

  • Kill a named Guest (known as the Target) that they share a room with. Only a Murderer may take this Dark Action, and a Dark List may contain only one Kill action. Upon taking this Action, if the Target is present in the same room as the Murderer, the Target becomes Dead. Either way, everyone in the room (except the attacker and the Target) Glimpses the attacker.
  • Wound a named Guest (known as the Target) that they share a room with. Only a Murderer may take this Dark Action, and a Dark List may contain only one Wound action. Upon taking this Action, if the Target is present in the same room as the Murderer, the Target becomes Wounded. Otherwise, the attack attempt makes a Crashing Noise in that room.
  • Handcuff a named Guest (known as the Target) that they share a room with. Only a Detective may take this Dark Action, and a Dark List may contain only one Handcuff action. Upon taking this Action, if the Target is present in the same room as the Detective, the Target becomes Restrained. Otherwise, the handcuffing attempt makes a Clicking Noise in that room.

And add a paragraph to the rule:-

Whenever a Kill action results in other Guests Glimpsing an attacker, the Executor shall select the Role of six random Guests (from those who were not the attacker), and privately share that same list - plus the Role of the attacker - with each Guest who Glimpsed it.

Giving the Murderers the option to try a full-out assassination, at the risk of anyone else in the room getting a strong clue as to their identity (which will get stronger and stronger as the night progresses and dormant suspects can be ruled out).

Also giving the Detectives something to do in the dark, and having it so that wounding and cuffing only makes a noise if it fails (given that it’s right there in the GNDT when it’s succeeded).

Proposal: Best regards, the Detective

Add a new rule titled “Pipe mail” to the dynastic ruleset, with the following text:

Cartlesham manor is equipped with a pipe mail system that connects all rooms to the Master Bedroom.
As a daily action and if the lights are on, any non-dormant guest may send a letter from any room to the Master Bedroom.
They do so by sending an e-mail to the Executor with their intention of doing so and the text of the letter.
Other people in the room of the sender are not notified of this happening.
If the lights are on and the executor has such a letter in his email inbox, and if there are any non-dormant Guests in the room where the letter is sent, he may inform them of the letter appearing and it’s content. The people informed this way may be referred to as ‘recipients’.

Add a sub-rule titled “Seals” to the previous rule with the following text:

The Detectives have Detective Seals, with which they can seal letters. If they do so, the Executor must also notify the recipients of the letter that it was sealed with a Detective Seal.
The Murderers are in possession of all of Lord Cartlesham’s personal seals. They may seal letters they send with such a seal. If they do so, the Executor must also notify the recipients of the letter that it was sealed with a Bloody Seal.

We can also add voting power to the Detectives this way, et cetera.

Centralized mail system for two reasons: 1, Less chaos; 2, Making another room valuable, therefore increasing the number of people there, and so spreading people. I didn’t include sending from the Master Bedroom to any other room, because I think that would make it too central.

People aren’t notified of other people sending pipe mail even though this way it’s unrealistic because then we could easily deduce who’s who.

By the way, I have a terrible Déjà vu about this proposal… I checked already and couldn’t find anything, but anyways: there wasn’t anything like this proposed in the past, was there?

Protosal: Allow more alternative proposals

Change rule 1.3 ” Proposals” to:

Any Guest may submit a Proposal to change the Ruleset or Gamestate, by posting an entry (http://blognomic.com/update/index.php?C=publish) in the “Proposal” category that describes those changes, when the Guest has less than 3 Proposals pending and has made less than 4 Proposals that day. All Proposals, which are an alternative for another one and have a note, which ensures this, can be submitted generally (this means the amount of pending Proposals and submitted Proposals that day does not matter), unless the Guest has already 5 such “Alternative Proposals” pending.

Proposals can either be Pending, Enacted, or Failed. When a Proposal is first put forward, it is considered Pending. A Proposal may not also be a Call for Judgment.

This could make the game a bit faster, often things like “:FOR: but, it would be better to…” are read in the comments. I hope that would change using this new possibility. This is a protosal, because this core rule change may be discussed.

Protosal: Dark happenings

When the Executor applies the effects of a Dark List, he must generate a random number between 1 and 10 and apply the effect below for each action:
1-7: The action occurs normally.
8: It is too dark to see; the action fails and its effects are not applied.
9: The guest hurts himself in his confusion. He becomes Wounded.
10: The guest hurts himself in his confusion. He becomes Wounded. He becomes Wounded a second time if he is changing floors (trips and falls down the stairs) and his location is changed to a random room on the lower of the two floors (destination and departure floors). This creates a crashing noise.

Take it and run.

In Rule 2.6 (Lights), replace “he may process the oldest of these Lists.” with:-

he may select one of these Lists at random and process it. The Executor may not process a Dark List within twelve hours of the Lights going out.

Remove “The phone rings” bullet point from Rule 2.9 (Incidents).

A couple of changes to remove the advantage that players get for checking the blog within a few minutes of the Executor posting to it. This guarantees that the lights will stay out for at least twelve hours, and that anyone who submits a Dark List in that time stands an equal chance of getting theirs processed first. It also removes the other quickest-response-gets-it mechanic, the telephone.

Proposal: Second batch of roles

Timed out 16 votes to 2. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 22 Jan 2010 07:21:33 UTC

If there is a “Functions of Roles” subrule, add the following text to it:

Colonel.  The colonel is extremely brave.  Whether or not the lights are on, if at any time the Colonel becomes Terrified, the Colonel may change his state from Terrified to Healthy.

Governess.  The Governess, being accustomed to dealing with children, is skilled at dealing with disrupted sleep patterns.  If the Governess is in the same room as a Guest who is Asleep (other than the Governess herself), then as a daily action, the Governess may change that Guest’s state to Healthy.

Apothecary.  The Apothecary is a trained expert in antidotes.  If the Apothecary is in the same room as a Guest who is Poisoned (other than the Apothecary himself), then as a daily action, the Apothecary may change that Guest’s state from Poisoned to Healthy.

Journalist.  The Journalist has a knack for ferreting out secrets.  If the Executor is required to privately provide information to a Guest as a result of that Guest’s exercise of his special power under the “Functions of Roles” subrule, then there is an 80% chance that the Executor will provide information to the Journalist; in that case, there is an 80% chance that the information provided by the Executor will be the same information that the Executor provided to the other relevant guest, and a 20% chance that the information will be false (with the Executor determining the outcomes of these percentages in whatever manner the Executor deems suitable).

Actor.  The Actor has a gift for imitating others.  The Actor may exercise the special power of any other Role that is described in the “Functions of Roles” subrule, provided that the Actor may not exercise the special power of any other particular Role more than once, nor exercise the aforementioned power more frequently than weekly.

Vicar.  The Vicar provides serenity to worried souls.  As a daily action, if the Vicar is in the same room as a Guest who is Terrified (other than the Vicar himself), then as a daily action, the Vicar may change that Guest’s state from Terrified to Healthy.

Banker.  The Banker has a talent for sizing up a person’s worth.  As a Weekly action, the Banker may contact the Executor by private telegram, specifying the name of one other Guest who is in the same room as the Banker and stating that he is auditing them.  Following the receipt of that private telegram, the Executor must privately truthfully reply to the Banker, stating that other Guest’s absolute degree of relation to Lord Cartlesham (expressed as a number in accordance with the “Bloodline” rule).

Gardener.  The Gardener is equipped with a sturdy pair of shears for trimming hedges.  As a daily action, if the Gardener is in the same room as a Guest who is Restrained (other than the Gardener himself), then as a daily action, the Gardener may change that Guest’s state from Restrained to Healthy.

Actuary.  The Actuary is an insufferable bore.  Once every 96 hours, if the Actuary is in the same room with a particular non-dormant Guest then the Actuary may set that other Guest’s status to “Asleep”.

Butler.  The Butler and the Maid, working as a pair, keep the house in smooth working order.  Once every 48 hours, whether or not the lights are on but so long as neither the Butler nor the Maid is dormant, if the Butler and the Maid are in different rooms (according to the GNDT, regardless of any moves that either of them may have made as a Dark Action), the Butler can move the Maid to the Butler’s then-current location.

Maid.  The Butler and the Maid, working as a pair, keep the house in smooth working order.  Once every 48 hours, whether or not the lights are on but so long as neither the Butler nor the Maid is dormant, if the Butler and the Maid are in different rooms (according to the GNDT, regardless of any moves that either of them may have made as a Dark Action), the Maid can move the Butler to the Maid’s then-current location.

This proposal intentionally makes no mention of the safety sentence.  If it’s in the ruleset by operation of the previous roles proposal, it stays in; if it’s not in, then this proposal doesn’t introduce it.

Incident: The Phone Rings

Not long after the power is restored to the manor, the rotary phone in the parlour begins to ring.

Proposal: Objects in the mirror v2

Add a new dynastic rule titled “Inventory” as follows:

There exist certain Items in the Manor. An Item may be hidden in some room in the Manor or it may be possessed by a Guest. A Guest can possess multiple Items but a particular Item can only be possessed by one Guest or be hidden in a room. The Executor privately tracks the Locations of any hidden Items and the possession of Items by Guests.

Add a subrule to the rule “Inventory” titled “Searching”

As a daily action a Guest may Search their current Location by sending a private message to the Executor. The Executor shall roll a DICEX where X = 2 if the Guest is alone in that room and X=4 otherwise. If it rolls 1 then the Guest is granted possession of these Items and informed privately as such.  If the dice does not role 1 or if there are no hidden Items in that location the Executor shall simply inform the Guest that their search was unsuccessful.

Add a subrule to the rule “Inventory” titled “Hiding Items”

A Guest may choose to Hide an Item by informing the Executor. The Executor shall remove the Item from the possession of the Guest and hide it in the Location that the Guest is currently in. Additionally if the Lights are On and the Guest is not alone in their Location, the Executor may roll a DICE4 and if it rolls 1 inform all other non-Dormant Guests in the same room that an Item was hidden in this Location.

Add a subrule to the rule “Inventory” titled “Valid Items”

The following Items exist in the Manor:

  • Torch: If a Guest possesses the Torch and if a Dark Action occurs in their present Location the Executor shall inform them of the Action that occurred.
  • Lantern: This has the same effect as the Torch.
  • Vial of Poison: This is the poison used to murder Lord Cartlesham.
  • Revolver: The Revolver is initially possessed by the Detective.
  • Matchbox: Just a regular matchbox.
  • Lord Cartlesham’s diary: If a Guest gains possession of the diary then the Executor may inform the Guest the name of a Guest who has a lower degree of relation to Lord Cartlesham than them.
  • Rope: A strong and sturdy rope.

When this proposal is enacted the Executor shall hide all Items listed above except for the Revolver in arbitrary Locations in the Manor. The Detective is given possession of the Revolver.

Simplify the inventory proposal by getting rid of the wiki and moving all Items to always being hidden.

In Rule 2.6 (Lights) change “with a list of one or more Dark Actions” to “with a list of at most five Dark Actions”:

If the Lights are Off, a non-Dormant Guest may email the Executor with a list of one or more Dark Actions they wish to take, if they have not already done so since the Lights last went Off. This list is known as a Dark List. The possible Dark Actions are:-

This is considered as an alternative for the proposal “Griefing the Executor/Murderer”, but can be used also additionally.

Grinding of the worst kind.

As things currently stand, there is _significant_ advantage to frequently checking the blog to see if the lights have just turned off, so you can sneak off to another room and avoid being attacked (or, if you’re a Murderer, to attack before anyone can move away).  This will be the case every single time the lights go out.  It sucks.  Don’t get me started on answering that damn phone when it rings.  Any ideas?

Proposal: Griefing the Executor/Murderer

Self-killed. -Ornithopter

Adminned at 21 Jan 2010 11:28:43 UTC

In the Rule “Lights”, add the sentence

When processing such a Dark List, the Executor may choose for the Dark List to have no effect if he feels that the actions described therein are excessively unnecessary, annoying, or otherwise detrimental to this Nomic; this includes, but is not necessarily limited to: an extremely long list, or moving into and immediately out of a room without doing anything useful in the interim for the sole purpose of making noises.

to the end of the paragraph reading

If the Lights are Off and the Executor has any unprocessed Dark Lists in his email inbox which were sent since the Lights last went Off, and whose sender is not Dormant, he may process the oldest of these Lists.

.

Wanna know a great way to prevent the Murderer from attacking you?  When the lights go out, quickly email Kevan with a list of Dark Movement Actions a mile long.  When your Dark List comes up in the queue, he’s not required to perform those actions, but he’s not allowed to skip over them, either.  If performed, he’ll be required to make a gazillion DICE4 rolls.

Reword Rule 2.4 (Cat and Mouse) to:-

Two of the Guests are Murderers. Although unaware of one another’s identities, they both consider themselves responsible for Lord Cartlesham’s death, and they intend to eliminate anyone who stands in the way of the inheritance. Two of the other Guests are undercover Detectives. One is from Cartlesham Police Station, the other from Scotland Yard - they are investigating the circumstances surrounding Lord Cartlesham’s death, and are initially unaware of one another’s identities. The identities of the Murderers and the Detectives are not tracked publicly, and are initially known only by the Executor.

If there are ever fewer than two Murderers or fewer than two Detectives, the Executor may privately select a random player (from those who are neither Murderers nor Detectives) and privately email them with an offer to make them into a Murderer or a Detective respectively. If they accept, and if the Executor honours their acceptance, then they become a Murderer or Detective as appropriate.

In Rule 2.6 (Lights), replace “the Detective, the Murderer” with “the Detectives, the Murderers” and replace “Only the Murderer may take this Dark Action” with “Only a Murderer may take this Dark Action”.

In Rule 2.9 (Incidents), replace “not the Murderer, or not the Detective” with “not a Murderer, or not a Detective”.

The existing Detective shall be considered to be the one from Cartlesham Police Station, should that ever mean anything.

This dinner party’s getting suspiciously crowded - perhaps there are more murderers and detectives among us than we first thought?

(This also gives me a way to assign more Detectives and Murderers if the existing ones idle out, in a way that doesn’t force the role on someone who doesn’t want it.)

Here come da judge

Uvthenfuv: being the sole current occupant of the Basement (as far as we know), this would be a good time for you to consult Rule 2.6 (“Lights”) and take a Dark Action to repair the fusebox.

Protosal: Some more roles in the oven

A sketch of a proposal to provide functions for some of the roles not covered by the prior proposal:

I would also include the same “safety sentence” language in this hypothetical proposal as in my previous proposal.

As I am out of proposal slots, if someone else wants to propose this (or an amended version of this) without waiting for me, be my guest.

Proposal: A Change for the Stranger

Adminned at 20 Jan 2010 14:08:43 UTC

Reword Rule 2.7 (Roles) to:-

Each Guest has a Role, which is tracked in the GNDT. The initial Role of each Guest is “Stranger”. If a Guest is a Stranger, or has the same Role as another Guest, they may change their Role to any Servant, Gentry or Tradesman Role which is not already taken by a Guest.

Add “Stranger” to the “D” list in Rule 2.7.1 (Valid Roles).

Change all Laborers to Strangers, in the GNDT.

Simplifying the “Roles” rule (and letting people still pick a role after 48 hours, rather than making it so that only the Executor can), and renaming Laborers to Strangers for the sake of the theme.

Incident: Lights Out

There is a flash of lightning through the lead-lined windows, and the lights of the house fade to a dull orange, before slowly darkening and winking out one by one. Except for a few thin shafts of moonlight falling between the curtains, the manor is now in pitch darkness. Thunder rumbles over the hills towards the coast.

“History.”

I’ve removed yuri’s (Ienpw’s) “history of Blognomic” page from the front page of the wiki. Why? Because it is useless to gameplay, contains little to no information which is in any way useful, and because the “information” in it is trivial—the time the author of the page had a name change, an age old minor controversy, minor trivia pieces that never come up, and links to things that are already on the main wiki page. Also, it kinda pisses me off that someone would consider it necessary, especially with the whole “moving the dynastic histories” thing back when you first tried it. Sorry, but no. If you can find some valid reason for it to exist, then post it here and put the page back up.

Part 1:
If there is a rule entitled “Roles”, add a subrule entitled “Functions of Roles” with text as follows:

Certain Roles have certain powers associated with them.  Unless expressly specified below, a power associated with a Role may only be exercised while the lights are on and while the Guest exercising that power is not Dormant.  The powers that are associated with particular Roles are cumulative with actions that a Guest may otherwise take.

Cook.  The Cook exercises lordly authority over the Kitchen.  If the Cook is in the Kitchen then, as a daily action, the Cook may “expel” all non-Servants from the Kitchen.  In this case, “expel” means that the Cook causes each affected Guest who is in the Kitchen to be moved to a Room selected by the Cook to which that Guest could have voluntarily moved (including, in the case of each affected Dormant Guest, a Room to which that Guest could have voluntarily Moved if that Guest were not Dormant), whereupon each such affected Guest may not return to the Kitchen for 24 hours.

Admiral.  The Admiral is blessed with nerves of steel.  Whether or not the lights are on, if at any time the Admiral becomes Stunned, the Admiral may change his state from Stunned to Healthy.

Film Director.  The Film Director is a keen observer of human behavior.  Once every 48 hours, if the Film Director is in a room with at least two other Guests, the Film Director may contact the Executor by private telegram, specifying the names of two other Guests who are in the same room with the Film Director and stating that he is observing them.  Following the receipt of that private telegram, the Executor must privately truthfully reply to the Film Director, stating which of those two specified Guests has the lower degree of relation to Lord Cartlesham.

Attorney.  The Attorney has a brilliant legal mind.  Once every 96 hours, if the Attorney is in the Library (regardless of whether any other Guests are in the Library), the Attorney may contact the Executor by private telegram, specifying the names of two other Guests and stating that he is researching them.  Folowing the receipt of that private telegram, the Executor must privately truthfully reply to the Attorney, stating which of those two specified Guests has the lower degree of relation to Lord Cartlesham.

Dowager.  The Dowager has a voracious appetite for gossip.  Once every 48 hours, the Dowager may contact the Executor by private telegram, stating that she is gossiping.  Folowing the receipt of that private telegram, the Executor must privately truthfully reply to the Dowager, naming two Guests specified by the Executor in the Executor’s discretion and stating which of them has the lower degree of relation to Lord Cartlesham.

Aristocrat.  The Aristocrat treats his social inferiors with a casual contempt.  As a daily action, the Aristocrat may “expel” all non-dormant Servants and Tradesmen from the Room in which the Aristocrat is located.  In this case, “expel” means that the Aristocrat causes each affected Guest who is in the relevant Room to be moved to a Room selected by the Aristocrat to which that Guest could have voluntarily moved, whereupon each such affected Guest may not return to the Room from which they were expelled for 24 hours or until the Aristocrat leaves the room, whichever happens first.

Judge.  The Judge exercises potent authority over cases that are brought before him.  If at any time there is a Crisis where the proposed action is expressly limited to changing the state of a single named Guest (such as a Crisis proposing to change the state of a particular Guest to “Restrained”), then the Judge’s vote counts double with respect to that Crisis.

Physician.  The Physician is a gifted healer.  If the Physician is in the same room as a Guest who is Wounded (other than the Physician himself), then as a daily action, the Physician may change that Guest’s state to Healthy.

Handyman.  The Handyman is frequently called upon to engage in repairs throughout the mansion.  If the lights are off, the handyman may still move as if the lights were on.

Part 2: If more than half of the EVCs to this proposal contain the text “Safety on”, then add the following text to the beginning of the “Functions of Roles” subrule:

This sentence may be referred to as the “safety sentence”—this “Functions of Roles” subrule (other than this safety sentence) shall not be given effect until this safety sentence is deleted from the ruleset.

It’s getting too crowded in here

I request to be idled.

Proposal: Functions of Roles (first proposed batch)

Self-killed, failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 19 Jan 2010 11:39:37 UTC

If there is a rule entitled “Roles”, add a subrule entitled “Functions of Roles” with text as follows:

Certain Roles have certain powers associated with them.  Unless expressly specified below, a power associated with a Role may only be exercised while the lights are on and while the Guest exercising that power is not Dormant.  The powers that are associated with particular Roles are cumulative with actions that a Guest may otherwise take.

Providing some proposed functions to certain roles.  I imagine that every named Role will eventually have some kind of special power.  These are generally limited to movement, genaeology and health state because these functions are, at present, the game mechanics that appear to be the most settled.  I am expressly including my own role, “cook” in the batch lest someone think that I am merely trying to paint a target on specified other Guests.

Proposal: Hints and Allegations

Reaches Quorum (17-6)
Enacted by Hix

Adminned at 19 Jan 2010 11:35:30 UTC

Add to rule Genealogy:

As a weekly action, if a non-Dormant Guest is alone in the Study, they may privately give the Executor the names of two other Guests. The Executor must then privately reply with the degree of relation of one of those two Guests (without giving their name), chosen randomly.

Also, add the role ‘Bodyguard’ to part C of the list of valid roles (Tradesmen).

Proposal: Incidents and Accidents

Reached quorum, 20 votes to 1. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 19 Jan 2010 04:52:46 UTC

Enact a new Rule, “Incidents”:-

As a daily action, and if the Lights are On, the Executor may announce an Incident. He does this by randomly selecting an item from the following list, updating the gamestate as specified, and posting a blog entry announcing its occurrence.

  1. The lights go out.
  2. Some kind of accident or revelation occurs in a randomly-selected room. If there are any Guests in that room, one of those Guests is selected at random and becomes Stunned or Terrified.
  3. The phone rings. The first non-Dormant player to leave a comment on the blog entry announcing it, while in the Parlor, will be privately given a Clue from the Executor. This Clue will truthfully confirm that a particular Guest of the Executor’s choosing is either not the Murderer, or not the Detective.

Enact a subrule to “Life and Death”, called “Recovery”:-

As a daily action, a Guest may Recover, and apply one of the following effects to themselves, of their choice:-

  • If they are Stunned, they become Asleep.
  • If they are Terrified and are in a room with more than two non-Dormant Guests, they become Healthy.
  • If they are Asleep, they become Healthy.
  • If they are Healthy, they become Asleep.

Remove “The state of the lights may be changed:” and the sentence beginning “By the Executor, as follows:” in Rule 2.6 (Lights).

A more strategically predictable version of Ienpw’s “the Executor may make anything happen” event proposal, a way for the lights to go out at more than my whim, and a method of recovering from being Stunned or Terrified. (Also a mechanism for going to sleep, if anyone’s tired.)

Proposal: Manoeuvres in the Dark

Reached quorum, 17 votes to 2. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 19 Jan 2010 04:50:24 UTC

Remove the paragraph beginning “If the Lights are Off, a non-Dormant Guest” from Rule 2.8.1.

To Rule 2.6 (Lights), add:-

If the Lights are Off, a non-Dormant Guest may email the Executor with a list of one or more Dark Actions they wish to take, if they have not already done so since the Lights last went Off. This list is known as a Dark List. The possible Dark Actions are:-

  • Move to another room on the same floor. This movement is not tracked in the GNDT, and is instead privately noted by the Executor. When the Lights are turned back On, the Executor will update the GNDT with the Locations of any Guests whose Location changed while the Lights were Off. When a Guest moves between rooms, it makes a Padding Noise in the room they left, and a Creaking Noise in the room they entered.
  • Move to another room on any floor. As above, except this action may only be taken by the Detective, the Murderer and the Servants, who all have a better knowledge of Cartlesham Manor.
  • Attack a named Guest (known as the Target) that they share a room with. Only the Murderer may take this Dark Action, and a Dark List may contain only one Attack action. Upon taking this Action, if the Target is present in the same room as the Murderer, the Target becomes Wounded. Either way, the attack attempt makes a Crashing Noise in that room.
  • Repair the fusebox. This Dark Action may only be taken in the Basement. Upon repairing the Fusebox, the Lights come back On and the remainder of the current Dark List is ignored.

If the Lights are Off and the Executor has any unprocessed Dark Lists in his email inbox which were sent since the Lights last went Off, and whose sender is not Dormant, he may process the oldest of these Lists.

Certain Dark Actions may make a type of Noise in a room. When such an action occurs, the Executor shall privately roll a four-sided die for each Guest in that room; on a 4, that Guest heard the noise. After one or more Dark Lists have been processed, the Executor shall notify any Guests who heard noises during those Lists’ Actions, listing the noises they heard in the order they were made.

Taking a stab at dark movement, so that we can get some murders going. The Murderer gets free reign of the house, so that we can’t easily eliminate everyone who was on a different floor. For now, the Murderer can only Wound people; we can try ramping that up to a straight kill later on.

Proposal: Objects in the Mirror

Can’t enacted with 17 votes AGAINST, without a change of vote. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 19 Jan 2010 04:48:52 UTC

Add a new dynastic rule titled “Inventory” as follows:

There exist certain Items in the Manor. An Item may be present in a particular Location and be visible to all Guests or it may be hidden in some room in the Manor or it may be possessed by a Guest. A Guest can possess multiple Items but a particular Item can only be possessed by one Guest or be present in a Location. All Items that are visible to all Guests and present in a room in the Manor are tracked on the wiki page titled “ManorItems”. All Items that are hidden in the Manor have their locations tracked privately by the Executor. All Items that are possessed by a Guest and visible to all Guests are tracked in the GNDT column “Inventory”. All Items that are possessed by a Guest and are hidden from other Guests have their owners privately tracked by the Executor. Any Item can override any part of this Rule in the description of the Item.

Add a subrule to the rule “Inventory” titled “Picking Up Items”

If an Item is visible and tracked on the “ManorItems” wiki page and it can be possessed by a Guest, then any Guest in the same Location as that of the Item can Pick up the Item. They update the “ManorItems” to remove the Item from that page and update their “Inventory” column to indicate possession of the Item. If an Item is hidden in the Manor and the Lights are On then as a daily action a Guest may Search their current Location for a particular Item by sending a private message to the Executor. If the Item is in that particular room and the Guest is alone in that room, then the Executor will roll a DICE2. If it rolls 1 then the Guest will be granted possession of the Item. If the Guest is not alone in that room then the Executor rolls DICE4 and if it rolls 1 grants the Guest possession of that Item. The possession of this Item will not be tracked in GNDT but instead tracked privately by the Executor. The Executor must inform the Guest the results of the Search by private message only indicating whether they found the Item or not.

Add a subrule to the rule “Inventory” titled “Dropping Items”

If a Guest has possession of an Item they may relinquish the possession by simply Dropping it in their current Location. To Drop an Item they update the “ManorItems” wiki with the new location of the Item and remove it from their “Inventory” GNDT column if it is tracked there. Additionally if the Lights are Off a Guest may choose to Hide an Item they possess in the Manor. To Hide an Item they inform the Executor saying that they wish to Hide the item in a Location of their choosing and update the “Inventory” column in GNDT if the Item is tracked there. The hidden Item is no longer in the possession of the Guest even though they know the Location where it is hidden.

Add a subrule to the rule “Inventory” titled “Valid Items”

The following Items exist in the Manor:

  • Torch: Turning the Lights Off has no effect on a Guest who possesses the Torch. i.e. all rules apply to the Guest as if the Lights were On. As soon as the Torch is picked by a Guest it is no longer hidden and is tracked in GNDT.
  • Lantern: This has the same effect as the Torch.
  • Candlestick: This has the same effect as the Torch.
  • Vial of Poison: This is the poison used to murder Lord Cartlesham.
  • Revolver: The Revolver is initially possessed by the Detective.
  • Matchbox: Just a regular matchbox.
  • Fountain Pen: Lord Cartlesham’s favorite pen.
  • Piano: An antique owned by Lord Cartlesham. It cannot be possessed by a Guest.
  • Safe: Contains the Will of Lord Cartlesham. It cannot be possessed by a Guest. The Safe can be Open or Closed. Any Item contained in the Safe cannot be possessed by a Guest unless the Safe is Open. The initial state of the Safe is Closed.
  • Will: The Will of Lord Cartlesham. It is initially contained in the Safe.

Create a wiki page titled “ManorItems” which contains the text:

Piano : Parlor
Lantern: Basement
Safe: Library
Fountain Pen: Library
Will: Safe

When this proposal is enacted the Executor must choose Locations to hide the following items: Torch, Candlestick, Vial of Poison, Matchbox.

Adding more flavor to the Manor by adding Items that can be picked up by Guests and used in some way to create various events in the Manor.

Good Morning, Nomicians

I would like to declare myself a player of this Nomic!

(Uneasy, testing waters with one or two toes. Three, tops. I’m new. Green, as they say.)

Proposal: What’s that on my forehead?

Self-killed -Darth

Adminned at 18 Jan 2010 11:00:41 UTC

Add a rule to the Ruleset, titled “The Target”:

There may exist a Target, which is a Guest the Murderer is particularly intent on killing in his quest for the inheritance. If no Target has been assigned, the Executor may pick a Guest at random out of all alive Guests with a lower degree of relation than the murderer and make him the Target. The Executor must then privately inform the Murderer of which group of roles (Servants, Gentry, Tradesmen or Lunatics) the Target is a member. The Executor does not inform the Murderer if the Target changes roles after having been assigned. If the Target is dead, he ceases to be the Target and the Executor may pick a new one.

I have no idea where to go from here, but I like the idea of the Murderer hunting down the competition for the inheritance.

Proposal: Shadow Actions

Self-killed -Darth

Adminned at 18 Jan 2010 11:00:17 UTC

Add a new rule called “Shadow Actions” to the ruleset, with the following text:

Some Guests have shadow actions. These actions can be taken by the Guests by contacting the Executor and informing him of the action to do.
Unless otherwise noted, these actions can only be done if the Guest is non-Dormant, the lights are off and he is in the room he wants to do the action in. These actions don’t change anything in the GNDT, but are their effects are tracked by the Executor.
Such Shadow Actions are:

If most of the EVC’s to this proposal contain the phrase “Hide and seek”, add the following to the list of Shadow Actions:

Guests may move to any other room on their floor.

Phrase “Darkness kills” in most EVC’s -> add:

Any Servant or Tradesman may, as a daily action, go up or down a floor in the direction of a Generator Switch.

Phrase “Just as planned, detective edition” in most EVC’s -> add:

As a weekly action, the Detective may set up a trap in a room. If the murderer tries to kill in that room and the light wasn’t switched on since the trap was set, he is restrained.

Phrase “Just as planned, murderer edition” in most EVC’s, but not “Daily catch problems” in most EVC’s -> add:

As a weekly action, the Murderer may set up a trap in a room. If any Guest enters that room and the light wasn’t switched on since the trap was set, the enterer is restrained.

Phrase “Daily catch problems” in most EVC’s -> add the same as above but with ‘weekly’ replaced with ‘daily’.

Wasn’t really confident, so only added things in EVC clauses.
I didn’t include killings, as we don’t have a weapons system yet, but it seems like we will (and I’m also afraid to die ;P)
The trap mechanisms could be elaborated on later, also we could add an ‘...if he has a trap…’ clause.

On an unrelated note I believe the rule of not repeating oneself should be in action in the ruleset… anyone else want a rule that states that “unless otherwise noted, doing any actions defined in the dynasty rules requires the following: being non-dormant(, etc.)”?
Also, we could re-organize the non-Shadow actions as “Light Actions” or some other name to categorize them.

Proposal: Where’d he go?

Degree of Relation Board

Aleth < Orni (source: Anonyman)
Ienpw < Bucky (Qwaz)
Ienpw < Hix (DC)
Wakukee < Qwazukee (DK)

Use this as a place to discuss degrees of relation, so that we’re not posting to the blog all the time. Feel free to edit the new information into the main body as it arrives.

Puzzling

Hix has a lower degree of relation to Cartlesham than Ienpw III.

Protosal: I was born for this role

Protosal: Our jargon for a half-baked proposal, soliciting ideas:
- Butler: Knows a secret passage between two rooms
- Cook: Can expel all non-SErvants from the Kitchen if he is in the Kitchen
- Handyman: Carries a flashlight.  May, when the lights are out, move as if the lights were on.

- Dowager: Is a fountain of gossip.  May ask the executor for genaeology as if under Rule 2.5.1 once every 96 hours regardless of her location.
- Attorney: If in the library, may ask the executor for genaeology under Rule 2.5.1 even if there are one or two other Guests in the Library
- Aristocrat: May expel all (but not less than all) Servants and Tradesmen from the room that he is in by causing them to move to a room that they could validly have moved to
- Physician: May improve the health status of a Guest in the same room
- Judge: Gets double votes on a Crisis whose object is to change the status of a single particular Guest (such as confining a particular Guest)
- Professor: May examine a room for clues as to events that formerly took place in the room (by private email to the Executor)

- Musician: Has an exceptional ear.  If the lights are off, knows whether any Guest moved into or out of the room that the Musician is in and has a 50% chance of correctly identifying one Guest who so moved
- Film director: Is a keen student of human behavior.  Once ever 96 hours, may ask the Executor to reveal the relative genaeology (per 2.5.1) of two other Guests who are both in the same room with him.
- Actor: Is a master of disguise.  Can somehow pretend to be another Guest for certain purposes
- Apothecary: Makes poison and cures poisoning, presumably
- Spiritualist: Can speak to the dead
- Mechanic: Same power as Handyman

Any ideas for the other missing professions, or for changing the ones that I have here?

Proposal: Seriously, only one bathroom in a mansion!?!

Self-killed—Rodlen

Adminned at 17 Jan 2010 14:43:44 UTC

Replace the contents of rule 2.8 Manor Plan with the following:

Within the Manor exist four floors. Each floor has one or more rooms. Each Guest is in a room; this is tracked in the GNDT column “Location”.

The following is a list of all rooms according to their floor, with a code indicating how they should be referred to in the GNDT.

  Attic: Attic [3-ATTC]
Second Floor: Master Bedroom [2-MBED], Study [2-STUD], Lounge [2-LNGE], Second Floor Bathroom [2-BATH].
First Floor: Library [1-LIBR], Dining Room [1-DNGR], Kitchen [1-KTCH], Parlor [1-PRLR], First Floor Bathroom [1-BATH].
  Basement: Basement [0-BSMT].

All Guests start in the Parlor. If, at any point, a Guest has an invalid value listed in field “Location”, it is replaced by the first value in above list.

Middle of dinner, need to go to bathroom…why go all the way upstairs?

Proposal: Because it doesn’t hurt to have this

Reached quorum, passed 17-2—Rodlen

Adminned at 17 Jan 2010 14:42:07 UTC

Add the following text to the end of rule 1.10 Free Play:

*A Guest should not do any action meant to make the game unplayable (for example, changing multiple keywords to the same word in an ascension address).

Just something I’ve been thinking about for a while.

Change two keywords to the same word, and the game’s pretty much ruined.

Bug fixes to alethioscript

Alethioscript, until now, has had some bugs in its vote-counting routines that only allow it to count votes in the first paragraph of a post. This bug doesn’t exhibit symptoms most of the time, but on several recent proposals (notably ‘Rereversion Revision’) it causes incorrect vote counts. I have posted a new version, at the usual place, which fixes this and also some other bugs relating to differences in vote counting between proposals and CfJs/DoVs. This is fairly important; anyone relying on Alethioscript for admin duties should install the new version now.

GNDT issues

For some reason, the GNDT keeps logging me out of it when I try to change anything. I got my role changed but wanted to put a reason for my choise but everytime I try it logs out on me without accepting my change. Anyone able to fix that? The remember me button isn’t working either.

Proposal: Weapons

18-2, cannot be enacted without CoV -Darth

Adminned at 17 Jan 2010 09:59:16 UTC

Add a new rule to the rule set called “Weapons” that reads:

There are 5 different weapons, a knife, a pistol, a club, a vial (of poison), and a rope. Weapons can be tracked in the GNDT under the “Weapon” column; however, weapons can also be hidden, in which case the weapon does not appear there. Weapons are either possessed by a guest or are in a room. All guests (including the executor) will initially start with “-” in the weapons column, which means that the guest either has no weapon or has a hidden weapon. The murderer starts with the knife, which is hidden. The detective starts with the pistol, which is also hidden. The remaining weapons will be hidden in undisclosed locations in the manor by the executor. If a guest is alone in a room, he may search the room for a weapon by sending the executor a private message. If there is a weapon in that room, that guest becomes the possessor of that weapon and keeps it hidden initially. A guest may only posses one weapon at a time. If a guest which has a weapon searches a room with a weapon, their weapon is switched with the one in that room, and their previous weapon is placed in that room; additionally, the new weapon becomes hidden.

If the Proposal titled “How Are You Feeling?” passes, then add the following subsection titled “Attacking” to the rule titled “Weapons” that reads:

As a daily action, a non dead guest may apply a weapon to another non dead guest in the same room. This is done by sending a private message to the executor explaining what weapon you wish to use on which guest.  If the other guest is unarmed (i.e. possesses no weapons, hidden or otherwise) this has the following effect:
*If the weapon is the knife, the other guest is wounded.
*If the weapon is the pistol, the other guest is wounded.
*If the weapon is the vial, the other guest is poisoned.
*If the weapon is the club, the other guest is stunned.
*If the weapon is the rope, the other guest is restrained.
If the other guest is armed, the attack becomes a duel, unless the attacker used the vial in which case the other guest is poisoned. If a certain weapon “beats” another weapon, a duel with those weapons will result in the guest with the losing weapon receiving the same effect as if they were attacked with the winning weapon while unarmed. Here is a table of which weapons will “beat” each other:
*Knife beats vial and rope.
*Pistol beats knife, vial, club and rope.
*Club beats knife and vial.
*Rope beats club.

(These follow the rules given in the proposal “How are you Feeling”, i.e. an already wounded guest that gets wounded becomes dead.)

If the lights are on and there is another guest in the room besides the guest getting attacked and the guest attacking, then the weapon becomes unhidden, if this is a duel, then both weapons are unhidden.

Additionally, the following effects occur for certain weapons:
If the weapon is the pistol, the weapon becomes unhidden.
If the weapon is the vial, the vial is destroyed and is no longer available for play.
If the weapon is the rope, the guest getting attacked becomes the possessor of the rope, which is unhidden.

If the attacking guest is not the murderer, the gangster, the colonel or the detective, that guest becomes a lunatic (i.e. the role of that guest is changed to “Lunatic”). In no case is the attacking guest explicitly identified (although in some cases it will be obvious).

If more than half of the EVCs contain the text “cyanide pill”, change the text

The detective starts with the pistol, which is also hidden.

to

The detective starts with the vial, which is also hidden.

I know the other weapons proposal got shot down, so I’m not really expecting this one to pass either. However, I tried to address the concerns there with this one. Particularly, innocent guests will become lunatics most of the time. By making the lunatic role very unsavory, we can prevent this from happening most of the time. Also, secret murders are possible, especially in a crowded room with the lights off…

For the record

I organized the list of roles in the dropdown of the GNDT to make it easier to deal with. I’m sure this is obvious, but it can’t hurt to state explicitly that “-SERVANTS-”, “GENTRY-”, “-TRADESMEN-”, and “-OTHER-” aren’t legal Roles.

A Mysterious Phonecall

I still haven’t had a reply from the Murderer or the Detective, suggesting that they either didn’t read this post, have fierce spam filters, or have obsolete email addresses in their BlogNomic profiles.

Can everyone check their profile to make sure it has an up-to-date email address (I’m using EE email for all private messages, including Genealogy queries)? And if the Murderer and Detective have received their email, can they drop me a line at cartlesham at gmail dot com to confirm? I’ll send out email alerts again in the morning, if I don’t hear from them before then, and maybe consider reassigning the roles if things stay quiet.

Add a dynastic rule titled “Movement and Location-Based Restrictions” as follows:

A. The Murderer and the Detective are not subject to the restrictions set forth in part B.
B. Subject to part A above, Gentry may not enter the Basement.  Tradesmen may not enter the Lounge.  Only Servants may enter the Kitchen.  No Guest may move to a different floor while the lights are off except that Servants and Tradesmen who are on the first floor may move to the Basement.
C. No more than three Guests may be in the Bathroom at the same time.
D. Guests who are in the Bathroom, the Basement or the Attic may not vote on a Crisis.  However, if otherwise eligible to vote on that Crisis but for the preceding sentence, they shall be counted in the Quorum with respect to that Crisis.

The oldest pending Proposal may be failed by any Admin, if any of the following are true:-
- It has enough AGAINST votes that it could not be Enacted without one of those votes being changed.
- It has been open for voting for at least 48 hours and half or fewer of its votes are FOR.
- It has been open for voting for at least 48 hours and has fewer than 2 valid votes.
- The Guest who proposed it has voted AGAINST it.
- The Executor has voted to VETO it

Well, we have a nice pile of pending proposals. Because the first one, Rereversion Revision, is a bit controversial, there may not be a Quorum of FOR votes any time soon, meaning we’ll have to wait another 24 hours or so before the rest of the proposals can be either enacted or failed. This not only slows down gameplay (we would have a floor plan and occupations by now, and Rereversion Revision won’t time out before the “Silence in the Library” and “How are you Feeling” have a chance to be enacted by Quorum) but also prevents Trawn, Anonyman and me, who already have two pending propositions, to have the self-killed one failed and go on with other suggestions for gameplay.

I think by allowing self-killed and vetoed proposals to be failed out-of-sequence (that is, even if they aren’t the oldest proposals), it would speed things up a bit as those propositions have no chance of passing anyway. However, because I don’t have much Nomic experience, I may not understand why things are as they are now. If so, can you please enlighten me?

Proposal: How Are You Feeling?

Reached quorum with 19 votes FOR. Enacted by Kevan.

Reword Rule 2.2 (Life and Death) to:-

Each Guest at Cartlesham Manor can be either Healthy, Stunned, Wounded, Poisoned, Restrained, Terrified, Asleep or Dead (as tracked in the GNDT). All Guests start the game Healthy. If a Guest is not Dead, they are considered to be Alive. If a Guest is Dead, Stunned, Restrained, Terrified or Asleep, they are considered to be Dormant.

Certain health states have restrictions on which health states may follow them:-

  • If a Guest is Stunned and would become Stunned again, they instead become Wounded.
  • If a Guest is Wounded and would become Wounded again, they instead become Dead. If a Guest is Wounded and would become Stunned, they remain Wounded.
  • If a Guest is Poisoned and would become anything other than Healthy, Poisoned or Dead, they instead remain Poisoned.
  • If a Guest is Restrained and would become anything other than Healthy, Restrained or Dead, they instead remain Restrained.
  • If a Guest is Dead, they cannot become anything other than Dead.

In Rule 2.3 (Crises), replace “A Dead Guest may not vote on a Crisis, and Quorum for the enactment of a Crisis will be calculated as half the number of living Guests, rounded down, plus one.” with:-

A Dormant Guest may not propose a Crisis or vote on one, and Quorum for the enactment of a Crisis will be calculated as half the number of non-Dormant Guests, rounded down, plus one.

If a Rule called “Movement” exists, replace “a Guest” with “a non-Dormant Guest” throughout it.

In Rule 2.5.1 (Genealogy), replace “a Guest” with “a non-Dormant Guest”.

Rename the “Health” GNDT column to “Status”, and change any Guest who is “Alive” to “Healthy”.

I was going to propose a version of Events with some defined and minor “accident happens in a room, inconveniencing a guest without killing them outright”, but I think we need more personal gamestate to play around with first. This sets up a somewhat arbitrary network of possible player states, and picks up Yabbaguy’s suggestion of “poisoned”.

Proposal: Silence in the Library

Reached quorum with 19 votes FOR. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 17 Jan 2010 04:13:54 UTC

If “Apparently I forgot the Cessna” failed, this proposal does nothing.

In Rule 2.5.1 (Genealogy), replace “As a weekly action, a Guest may ask the Executor” with:-

As a weekly action, if a Guest is alone in the Library, they may ask the Executor

To the first paragraph of the rule “Manor Plan”, add:-

If a Guest is the only Guest in a particular room, they are considered to be alone in that room.

Making genealogy checks less of a no-brainer by requiring guests to root through the library shelves when nobody else is looking.

Returning, too lazy to actually unidle self

Hi, guys!

I’m back…and lazy!

Proposal: Fusebox

Illegal proposal - Thrawn already had two proposals pending.

Adminned at 16 Jan 2010 04:05:53 UTC

Add to the end of rule 2.6 Lights

*A living guest in the basement may as a daily action change the state of the lights by posting a blog post indicating the new state of the lights

If the Rule “Manor Plan” does not exist, this Proposal does nothing.

Proposal: Food Glorious Food take 2

Can’t enact with 16 votes against. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 17 Jan 2010 02:51:10 UTC

Add a dynastic rule entitled “Hunger” which reads as follows

Each guest has Hunger, this being a number between 0 and 10 tracked in the GNDT column “Hunger”. A new guest has a hunger of 0.

If “Manor Plan” is a rule, add to the end of “Hunger”

A guest in the Dining Room, Kitchen or Parlor may eat, reducing their Hunger to 0.

Set the Hunger of all guests to 0.

Proposal: Catch me if you can.

Reached quorum with 19 votes and 12 stealths. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 16 Jan 2010 11:49:37 UTC

If the Rule “Manor Plan” does not exist, this Proposal does nothing.

Add a Subrule to the Rule “Manor Plan” titled “Movement” as follows:

If the Lights are On, a Guest may move to any room on the same floor by updating the GNDT “Location” field with a new room. Additionally, as a daily action a Guest may change their Location to a room on a different floor.

If a majority of the EVCs for this proposal contain the word “stealth” add the following sentences to the end of the “Movement” subrule:

If the Lights are Off, a Guest can move to any room on the same floor by privately informing (PM, email) the Executor of the Location they want to move to. Their Location is not tracked in GNDT but privately noted by the Executor. A Guest cannot move to a room on a different floor if the Lights are Off. When the Lights are turned back On, the Executor will update the GNDT with Locations of any Guests that may have moved when the Lights were Off.

Keep movement fairly non-restrictive when the lights are on. When Lights are off keep movement hidden.

Proposal: Don’t mind me

Can’t reach quorum with 18 votes against. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 16 Jan 2010 11:47:39 UTC

If the Rule “Manor Plan” does not exist, this Proposal does nothing.

Add a dynastic rule entitled: “No one will mind” with the following text:

Each guest may posses Worldly Goods, which are tracked in the GNDT column “Possessions”
If a guest is alone in a room that contains a Worldly Good, and if the lights are on, that guest may, as a daily action, steal that Worldly Good. When a Worldly Good is stolen, that Worldly Good is added to the guest’s list of possessions, but is not removed from the room.
Two guests may each posses a copy of the same Worldly Good, but no guest may posses more than one of each Worldly Good.
Initially, guests posses no Worldly Goods.

Also add a sub-rule entitled: “Thingies” with the following text

The Attic contains the Worldly Good “Paintings”
The Master Bedroom contains the Worldly Good “Bonds”
The Study contains the Worldly Good “Manuscripts”
The Lounge contains the Worldly Good “Radio”
The Library contains the Worldly Good “Stained Glass”
The Dining Room contains the Worldly Good “China”
The Kitchen contains the Worldly Good “Silver”
The Parlor contains the Worldly Good “Piano”
The Basement contains the Worldly Good “Cessna”

I figure we are here to listen to the will and get things, not kill each other. Let the murderer kill people. Also I added the “Alone in the room”, and the “lights on” clauses to give people incentive to spread out and to prevent grinding.

Proposal: Food Glorious Food

Self-killed, failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 16 Jan 2010 11:46:42 UTC

Add a dynastic rule entitled “Hunger” which reads as follows

Each guest has Hunger, this being a number between 0 and 10 tracked in the GNDT column “Hunger”.

If “Manor Plan” is a rule, add to the end of “Hunger”

A guest in the Dining Room, Kitchen or Parlor may eat, reducing their Hunger to 0.

This doesn’t do much now, but when the ruleset gets bigger we can create ways for hunger to increase, effects of high and low hunger, and rules for poisoning food.

Proposal: Survival of the Fittest (second attempt)

Can’t reach quorum with 17 votes against. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 16 Jan 2010 11:45:09 UTC

Creates a Dynastic rule entitled “Survival of the Fittest”. That rule has the following effect:

Should only one Guest have the Health status of Alive at any time, then that Guest achieves victory.

Resubmitted with more standard phrasing for proposals. Sorry about the errors I made earlier.

Welcome to the newcomers

We seem to be getting a lot of newcomers.  Welcome.  Out of curiosity- if you’re new, how did you hear about Blognomic?

Rocket-propelled hello!

I resquest to be added to the list of active players.

I brought pie for everyone. ^^

Proposal: Weapons of Mass Destruction

Can’t reach quorum with 19 votes against. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 16 Jan 2010 11:44:27 UTC

If the Rule “Manor Plan” does not exist, this Proposal does nothing.

Add a new dynastic rule titled “Weapons” as follows:

Certain Weapons exist in the Manor. Each Guest may carry one or more Weapons which are tracked in the GNDT column “Weapons”. A Weapon cannot be carried by more than one Guest. Initially all Guests start with no Weapons. The following is a list of available Weapons:

  • Knife
  • Revolver
  • Poison
  • Rope
  • Baseball bat
  • Candlestick

Add a new dynastic rule titled “Assasination” as follows:

As a weekly action any Guest can Kill any other Guest provided the following are true:

  • Both the Guest taking the action and the Guest to be killed are Alive.
  • The Lights are Off
  • Both the Guests have the same Location and there are no other Alive Guests in that Location.
  • The Guest taking that action has more Weapons than the Guest being killed

When a Guest is killed their Health is set to Dead and any Weapons carried by both the Guests involved in the killing are removed from their possession.

Initial stab at starting to kill off guests. Still have to figure out how weapons could be found.

Proposal: Survival of the Fittest

Self-killed, failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 16 Jan 2010 10:50:49 UTC

Should only one Guest have the Health status of Alive, then that Guest is victorious.

Seems like a logical victory condition, and with no current rules for killing then it shouldn’t end the Dynasty too soon. Sorry if I’ve made some kind of newbie mistake in doing this.

Some more information

Alethiophile is more closely related to Lord Cartlesham, than Ornithopter.

Any thoughts?

The Game is Afoot

The Detective and Murderer have now been notified of their own identities. If you didn’t just receive an email telling you that you are the Detective or the Murderer, then you’re just an innocent guest of Lord Cartlesham. (Unless your spam filter ate the email. I suppose both the Murderer and Detective should send an email to cartlesham at gmail dot com to confirm that they heard me.)

There is a crack of thunder, and the chandeliers flicker for a moment.

Proposal: Apparently I forgot the Cessna

Reached quorum 20 votes to 2. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 16 Jan 2010 10:50:04 UTC

Add a dynastic rule entitled: “Manor Plan”, as follows:

Within the Manor exist four floors. Each floor has one or more rooms. Each Guest is in a room; this is tracked in the GNDT column “Location”.

Following is a list of all rooms according to their floor, with a code indicating how they should be refered to in the GNDT.
Attic: Attic [3-ATTC]
Second Floor: Master Bedroom [2-MBED], Study [2-STUD], Lounge [2-LNGE], Bathroom [2-BATH].
First Floor: Library [1-LIBR], Dining Room [1-DNGR], Kitchen [1-KTCH], Parlor [1-PRLR].
Basement: Basement [0-BSMT].

All Guests start in the Parlor. If, at any point, a Guest has an invalid value listed in field “Location”, it is replaced by the first value in above list.

For example, a person in the basement would have their location listed as 0-BSMT.

We can add Movement rules later (and I think we should, if we want action): this is a foundation for them to be built on.

And the logical puzzling begins…

Ienpw has a lower degree of relation to Cartlesham than Bucky.

Proposal: Of the habit of Monkeys to use Tangelo-Flavored Cheese as their DDA-Endorsed Hats

Self-killed, failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 16 Jan 2010 10:40:07 UTC

Add a dynastic rule entitled: “Manor Plan”, as follows:

Within the Manor exists four floors. Each Guest is within a floor; this is tracked in the GNDT column “Location”.

On each floor there is a specific number of rooms, as follows:
Attic: Only one room.
Second Floor: Master Bedroom, Study, Lounge, Bathroom.
First Floor: Library, Dining Room, Kitchen, Parlor.
Basement: Only one room, where the fusebox is.

Each guest is in a room; this is tracked in the GNDT column “Room”.

Movement rules can be added later, this is a basis so that we can work on them.

Alright, since we don’t plot anymore anyway

The DDA is hereby disbanded.

And there was much rejoicing.

Proposal: A New {Cat/Mouse} Emerges

Can’t reach quorum with 19 votes against. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 16 Jan 2010 10:39:24 UTC

Add a subrule to Rule 2.4 (Cat and Mouse) titled “The Bird Has Left the Nest” which reads as follows:

Should either the Detective or Murderer go Idle, the Guest loses the distinction of being Murderer or Detective, the Executor shall make a blog post as soon as possible announcing that the Idling Guest was the {detective/murderer} and then shall randomly select and notify a new Guest to fill the vacant role. This selected Guest may not already be the Murderer or Detective.

If we have to deal with the risk of Idling, while the concept of having the hostile or friendly in a completely different situation/room/whatever is a bit haphazard, the other possibility, the complete absence of a role, is just plain broken.

Proposal: Hi ho, hi ho, it’s off to work we go

Reached quorum 19 votes to 2. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 16 Jan 2010 10:27:53 UTC

Part 1: Add a dynastic rule entitled “Roles” with text as follows:

Each Guest has a Role, which is tracked in the GNDT.  The initial Role of each Guest is “Laborer”.  Within 48 hours after the enactment of this Proposal (or, with respect to a new Guest, within 48 hours after that Guest becoming active), such Guest shall, once, choose for himself a Role other than “Laborer” or “Lunatic” from the list of valid Roles set forth in a subrule to this Rule and update the GNDT accordingly, so long as no other Guest already has that particular Role; if such Guest does not do so within that time period then the Executor may choose a Role for that Guest.  Once a Guest has a Role, it may not again be changed except as the gamestate or ruleset otherwise permits.  If a Guest with a particular Role idles and then subsequently de-idles during this Dynasty then the Guest shall revert to the Role that he had immediately prior to idling, unless another Guest already has that Role in which case the second sentence of this Rule shall apply with respect to the de-idling Guest as if he were a new Guest.

Part 2: Add a subrule to the rule “Roles” with text as follows:
The list of valid Roles is as follows:

A.  Servants (any Guest with a Role listed in this Part A may be referred to as a Servant): Butler, Cook, Maid, Governess, Gardener, Chauffeur, Handyman.
B.  Gentry (any Guest with a Role listed in this Part B may be referred to as Gentry): Dowager, Aristocrat, Attorney, Professor, Colonel, Vicar, Admiral, Banker, Judge, Physician, Diplomat, Curator
C.  Tradesmen (any Guest with a Role listed in this Part C may be referred to as a Tradesman): Musician, Film Director, Actor, Journalist, Secretary, Gangster, Architect, Athlete, Laborer, Jeweler, Inventor, Stonemason, Spiritualist, Mechanic, Novelist, Actuary, Apothecary, Housewife
D.  Lunatic

Part 3: Notwithstanding the content of Part 2 set forth above, if the Executor casts a Vote on this Proposal and, in his EVC, specifies that any changes be made to the content of Part 2 set forth above (such as, without limitation, additions or subtractions of Roles) then the content of Part 2 of this Proposal shall be deemed revised as so specified by the Executor.

Creating a fairly-long but finite list of Roles.  Roles are divided into classes (e.g. Servants) since it is anticipated that Guests who are members of certain Classes will have certain rights and responsibiliites.  “Lunatic” is not available as an initial Role but is a hook for future proposals whereby someone might be converted into one.  Note that the Executor isn’t a Guest and doesn’t have a Role.

Proposal: Rereversion revision

Reached quorum 17 votes to 5. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 16 Jan 2010 10:24:16 UTC

In rule 1.7 “Gamestate Tracking”, replace

All updates to the GNDT are logged - if a Guest feels that an alteration goes against the Rules (as they were at the time of the alteration), he may simply undo the effects of that alteration. If such an undoing is disputed, a Call for Judgment shall be raised.

with

All updates to the GNDT are logged. Actions that change gamestate directly (defined in other rules) can normally be performed simply by applying their effects to the GNDT, which updates the gamestate accordingly, unless another rule specifies some other method of performing them; one GNDT update may contain one or more actions, or one action may be split over multiple GNDT updates, as long as it’s clear what is happening and the actions are otherwise legal. A GNDT update that does not perform a rules-defined action does not alter the gamestate; Guests should not alter the GNDT except to correct it to match the actual gamestate (in the case that the two somehow end up different), or to perform an action.

If a Guest feels that the GNDT was altered such that it no longer matches the gamestate (such as by performing an action which was against the Rules (as they were at the time of the alteration), or by any other means), he may simply undo the effects of that alteration. Instead of repeatedly reverting and re-reverting a disputed GNDT update, Guests are encouraged to raise a Call for Judgment instead.

The start of a dynasty is generally the best time to tweak the core rules. What the rules say at the moment clearly isn’t what they’re supposed to say; hopefully this should fix it. This also adds some rules that people have been following for months, but which weren’t explicitly stated, explicitly to the ruleset.
The individual changes: avoid mandatory calling of a pointless CFJ after a GNDT rereversion, allow players to alter the GNDT to match the gamestate if they differ (we’ve been doing this for years, but it’s technically illegal!), explicitly state the informal rule that multiple actions can be combined into one GNDT update, state that players can perform gamestate-altering actions just by changing the GNDT (newbies keep posting them on the blog instead, and technically speaking, I think they’re correct under the old ruleset).
Incidentally, this also clarifies what happens in the case of gamestate that updates automatically at a certain time; the gamestate actually changes, and any Guest can update the GNDT to match the gamestate. This is what we were doing anyway (in, say, Amnistar’s dynasty), but it’s nice to make it clear.

Proposal: What Crisis?

Reached quorum with 21 votes FOR. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 16 Jan 2010 02:53:39 UTC

In Rule 2.3 (Crises), replace “The Executor may Veto any Crisis proposal which he considers to be physically impossible, or otherwise inappropriate.” with:-

If the Executor has not cast a vote on a Crisis, it cannot be enacted, and it can be failed if it has been open for voting for at least 48 hours. The Executor may Veto any Crisis proposal which he considers to be physically impossible, or otherwise inappropriate.

And while I’m here, add to Rule 2.1 (Away Until Morning):-

The Executor can be contacted by private telegram at cartlesham at gmail dot com.

Making it so that the Executor has to approve (or at least DEFerentially wave through) any Crisis before it can enact. I’ll leave the veto in as an explicit reminder that “magically reveal the murderer” type Crises will always fail.

Cartlesham Post Office

Okay, so the admin interface has a section which clearly shows a record of all private messages and emails sent through the EE interface. But it can be turned off by toggling the “Log Email Console Messages” setting.

So I suppose I can use the EE interface to send secure messages to players, occasionally checking before and after I send anything that nobody’s turned the logging back on. (If I definitely check it when sending out the you-are-the-murderer type emails, the murderer can continue their plans by emailing me directly without any risk of compromise. I’ll set up a dedicated Gmail account to make sure I don’t lose anything in all my regular email.)

Does that sound like it should work?

The Idlest Idler

Rune Master Xan hasn’t commented since October 2009 - so far as I can tell, he unidled last week to make a Wish to change the header of a dynasty he wasn’t playing, and hasn’t taken a single game action since. (If this kind of thing is his only purpose in BlogNomic - is he another player’s brother? - I think we might need a new Fair Play rule.)

Un-Idling

I’d like to be un-idled.

I am going insane

I request to be unidled. Note that this request cannot be fulfilled until the 16th.

Hello, BlogNomic people!

As per rule 1.2, I would like to declare myself a player of this nomic. Hello, and good luck to everyone!

O HAI DDA! IM BAK!

In the First Dynasty of yuri_dragon_17, I left the DDA, stating that I would rejoin in the Sixth Dynasty of Kevan.

Well, what do you know… I’m back in the DDA! Also, I helped Wak with his scam to win last dynasty under the condition that he’d join the DDA; he agreed to join after the end of his dynasty. He is now a DDA member.

Please note that Wakukee is ni longer a DDA member.—Wakukee

Please note that Wakukee actually could not leave per the agreement, and is thus still a DDA member. -Darth

That part of the agreement was designated “a lie”. (Doctor Who reference!)

Proposal: I give you… LIVES!

He giveth, he taketh away. Self-killed, failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 15 Jan 2010 10:19:14 UTC

Add a subrule to the Rule “Life and Death” titled “Lives” that reads as follows:

Each Guest shall have a numeric statistic called “Lives”, publically tracked in the GNDT. If a guest ever has 0 or fewer lives, they are listed as Dead, otherwise they are listed as Alive.

The initial value for every Guest’s Lives is 10. The Executioner’s lives are listed as infinite.

Just a thought for an initial health system, but not one overly complex. In case we come up with “Wounded”, “Incapacitated”, “Poisoned”, or whatever, we can change this later.

Possible Map?

I personally think that the Kill Dr. Lucky map could be workable for this dynasty. Here are 2 images of the board, from two editions. Please post here saying if you agree that they could work or not, and which you would prefer. In kill Dr. Lucky, you start in the Foyer, btw.

Well that was odd…

Okay, this is really odd… I never actually posted the Publish button, but still…

On a similar topic, I think I will need some pointer on Post Publication and Saving. (On the IRC channel, perhaps?) =P

It seems apropos…

...to note that there is now a new version of Alethio-Sparrow-script (can anyone think of a less painful name for it than that?) available, which incorporates a settings menu that allows you, among other things, to set the name of the current emperor for vote counts. This one also doesn’t count the proposer as a FOR vote on posts that aren’t proposals. (Sorry for edit, but ‘Quick Save’ doesn’t do what I thought it did.) The script is available here.

De-Enacting

The proposal “The Door is Locked” was enacted early; a proposal cannot be enacted unless it has been open for at least 12 hours. So I de-enacted it.

Proposal: Again, with slightly less flavour

Can’t be enacted with 15 votes AGAINST, without a change of vote. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 15 Jan 2010 10:17:54 UTC

Add a rule, “Events”:

The Executor may cause an event to happen by making a story post to the blog, the title of which must contain the word “Event”. The post should detail the effects of the event. The event may cause gamestate changes that may be applied immediately, or later, as specified by the event. Events may not be created more than once every 96 hours, and may not modify the rules.

Proposal: With more flavour, please

Self-killed, failed by Kevan.

Idle

arthexis goes Idle. 28/15, which is still a LOT.

Protosal: list of occupations

draft list at
http://blognomic.com/wiki/index.php?title=User:Spikebrennan/Sandbox-4#Non-Employment_Occupations
with the idea being that each one would be unique, and nobody can choose “Lunatic” or “Dead body” at the outset.

Protosal: Out and About

Add a new Dynastic Rule named “The Manor” with the following text:

Within the Manner exists three floors. The first and second having multiple rooms, while the third is the Attic. As a daily action, each Guest may move their location to a different floor. In addition, each Guest’s location will be tracked in a column in the GNDT called “Floor.” “1st” indicates a location of the first floor. “2nd” indicates a location of the second floor. “3rd” indicates a location of the Attic. Each Guest may move to as many rooms as they wish on each floor. However, once entering the Attic, that Guest may leave to the second floor at any time, but may only re-enter the Attic at midnight the next day.

Add a sub-rule named “Rooms” with the following text:

On each floor there is a specific number of rooms. The Attic shall only contain one room. The first floor contains the Main Hallway, the Dining Room, Kitchen, and Parlor. The second floor contains the Master Bedroom, Study, Bathroom, Guest Bedroom, and Balcony. Each room is tracked in a column in the GNDT called “Room” which tracks each room by it’s respective title.. Once entering a room, that Guest shall update their status to reflect the change of location within the manner.

I tried to make the movement as loose as I could while still having some restrictions on movement; keep in mind this is just a Protosal, and is open for suggestion and criticism.

Unidling

Quorum is now 16. Yikes.

Also, hi.

History

Can someone please update the History with Kevan’s Sixth Dynasty, including the players who are active at its beginning? This is normally my kind of thing, but I’m super-busy atm….

Proposal: Guessing the will, proposal edition

If a rule “Bloodline” exists, create the following subrule, “Genealogy”, to it:

As a weekly action, a Guest may ask the Executor (via PM or other private means of communication, such as private message on IRC) which of two Guests (other than the Guest asking) has the lower degree of relation to Lord Cartlesham. The Executor must privately reply truthfully to such queries, as soon as is reasonable.

I keep doing that…

A Car is Heard

Lars Atomica hasn’t commented since the 4th, and is now idle under Rule 1.2.

Guessing the will

Basically, lets us do some research so we can guess at the contents of Lord Cartlesham’s will.

Blognomicbot and the topic

I’ve told Blognomicbot to put the topic in the info it outputs, as well as the list of people talking. The scripts here need updating to handle that (Kevan says only someone with the password to the server can do that.) Hilariously, the current script seems to take the topic as the list of people speaking, and disregard the list of people speaking altogether, so I had a bit of fun changing the channel topic…

Proposal: Occupy yourself

Can’t reach quorum with 17 votes AGAINST. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 15 Jan 2010 03:04:27 UTC

Add a dynastic rule entitled: “Technical definitions”, as follows:
The “Reference Source” is English-language Wikipedia as of 23:59:59 GMT on January 13, 2009, disregarding changes later than that time.

Add a dynastic rule entitled “Occupations”, as follows:

Each Guest has a single Occupation, which is noted in the GNDT.  The Executor’s Occupation is always “Executor”.  Each Guest starts with a blank “Occupation”.  Any Guest with a blank Occupation may give themselves a replacement Occupation so long as ithe Occupation is valid.  Valid Occupations are occupations or descriptive titles given to characters in the Reference Source articles that are listed on the Reference Source article “List of works by Agatha Christie”, but excluding “Detective”, “Inspector” or any occupation that obviously and directly relates to police work or criminal behavior as the Executor determines in his sole discretion.  For example, each of the following is a valid Occupation (unless the Executor disapproves of such Occupation in the manner described below): “Colonel” (e.g. Colonel Bantry in “The Body in the Library”); “Socialite” (Miss Van Schuyler from “Death on the Nile”); “Vicar” (Vicar Jones in “Why Didn’t They Ask Evans”); “Noblewoman” (Princess Natalia Dragomiroff from “Murder on the Orient Express”); or “Valet” (Edward Henry Masterman, also from “Orient Express”).  When a Guest gives himself a replacement Occupation, he shall update the GNDT and include, as a comment, a reference to the character and Agatha Christie work justifying the legitimacy of the Occupation.  The Executor may, at any time and for any reason, disapprove an Occupation by reverting the relevant Guest’s Occupation to Blank, and is encouraged to make a blog post explaining the action.

Proposal: Hey- who turned out the lights?

Reached quorum with 22 votes FOR. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 15 Jan 2010 02:55:17 UTC

Add a new dynastic rule, entitled, “Lights”, as follows:

At all times, the lights are either “on” or “off”.  The initial state of the lights is “on”.  The state of the lights may be changed as follows:
* By the Executor, as follows: The Executor may, from time to time, change the state of the lights by posting a blog post indicating the new state of the lights.

Proposal: It’s All About The Blood

Reached quorum with 19 votes FOR. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 15 Jan 2010 02:52:40 UTC

Enact a new Rule, “Bloodline”:-

Each Guest has a degree of relation to Lord Cartlesham, represented as a number between 1 and 1000 and tracked privately by the Executor. The Guest with the lowest degree of relation is Lord Cartlesham’s next of kin.

If a Guest has no degree of relation defined, the Executor may privately assign a randomly-selected degree to that Guest. If two Guests should ever have the same degree, the Executor should choose one of those Guests at random and raise or lower their degree by 1.

Proposal: The Door is Locked

Reached quorum, 18 votes to 2. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 15 Jan 2010 02:48:58 UTC

Rename Rule 2.1 (Dji-Man) to “Away Until Morning”.

Enact a new Rule, “Life and Death”:-

Each Guest at Cartlesham Manor can be either Alive or Dead (as tracked in the GNDT). All Guests start the game Alive.

Enact a new Rule, “Crises”:-

If a Proposal title includes the phrase “Crisis:”, then it represents a solution to a physical problem within the manor (such as a fire, a locked door or a guest who is behaving suspiciously). A Dead Guest may not vote on a Crisis, and Quorum for the enactment of a Crisis will be calculated as half the number of living Guests, rounded down, plus one.

The Executor may Veto any Crisis proposal which he considers to be physically impossible, or otherwise inappropriate.

Enact a new Rule, “Cat and Mouse”:-

One of the Guests is a Murderer. Having killed Lord Cartlesham, he or she intends to eliminate anyone who stands in the way of the inheritance. Another of the Guests is an undercover Detective. He or she is investigating the circumstances surrounding Lord Cartlesham’s death.

The identities of the Murderer and the Detective are not tracked publicly, and are initially known only by the Executor.

Upon enactment of this proposal, the Executor shall select a random Guest to be the Murderer, and a random Guest (other than the Murderer) to be the Detective.

Basic Werewolf-style mechanics, with a small twist. We can see where it goes from here.

Note that we’ll need to set up some kind of secure email confirmation (as last time) before I can tell the murderer and detective who they are - if it looks like we’re going with these rules, we can go ahead and start sorting out email.

Ascension Address: Welcome to Cartlesham Manor

Thank you all for taking the time and trouble to journey through the thick fog and treacherous country lanes to Cartlesham Manor, this evening. As you are all well aware, the sudden and tragic death of Lord Cartlesham means that the majority of his estate and not inconsiderable fortune is due to pass to the next in the family line. As the executor of his will, I am required to read its terms to you at 9am sharp in his lordship’s library, tomorrow morning. You will find that rooms have been laid out in the east wing, and the kitchen staff have - before retiring for the night - laid out a small banquet in the dining hall.

I’ll take my leave of you before this fog gets any worse. I trust I shall see you all in the morning.

Change “Djinni” to “Executor” throughout the ruleset, and “Adventurer” to “Guest”. Repeal all Dynastic Rules except Rule 2.1 (Dji-man), but including Rules 2.1.1 and 2.1.2.

This is intended to give room for another Werewolf-style dynasty (where a small minority of players are secretly murdering the others, who have to fight back), if enough people want to play one - I know a few regulars were disappointed to have missed the Werewolf Dynasty in 2007. There’s plenty of scope for other directions, though.

A tip of the hat to this Flickr user for the CC-licenced blood drips in the dynastic title image.

I wish to be unidled.

Yeah, I logged on today to unidle, only to find a DoV! Well done? At any rate, I still want to be unidled. Can an admin do this for me? Meanwhile, I think I need to clean up some spam accounts…

Unidle

I request to be unidled the next time a DoV passes.

Hi!

Hello!

I have come across this wonderful place along my winding journey to find a good Nomic game, and I would like to join the fun. Can an administrator add me to the list of players?

Thanks a lot!

Declaration of Victory: All the Amulets

Passed, 20-0. Kevan may post his Ascension Address when he’s ready. Josh

Adminned at 13 Jan 2010 23:28:34 UTC

Having been awarded three Amulets and the Go-Faster Gloves for already having been at Funafuti for 24 hours, I use the Gloves to lift the fourth Amulet from Alethiophile, who shares a Location with me. As the holder of all four Amulets, I have achieved victory.

Call for Judgment: To stop the universe exploding

Failed per “Any CfJ that has no effect on the ruleset or gamestate may be automatically failed by any admin.” in Rule 1.6. -Ornithopter

Actually, this does have an effect on gamestate. It causes itself to be a “waste of time”, not completely nil. Unadminning- Ienpw.

Re-adminned; timed out.—alethiophile

Adminned at 14 Jan 2010 13:44:08 UTC

Retroactively cause this CFJ to have been a waste of time.

Because, apparently rereverting obligates someone (it’s unspecified who) to create a CFJ. That clause in rule 1.7 (“If such an undoing is disputed, a Call for Judgment shall be raised.”) looks rather weird and problematic; what it says is probably not what it means.

Wishes granted

Ok, some new granted wishes and me explaining one of them, as it directly effects another persons wish.

First, Rune Master wished for the header to revert back to how it was at the start, so if someone can do that thanks.

Second wish was Kev wishing that he had been at Funafuti for 23hrs, 59mins and 59 secs already. This causes him to have been at Funafuti for over 24hrs(as by now the 2 seconds left have come and gone), allowing him to claim the relics. This gets around another wish made that in the event that I had to pick between 2 or more Adventurers that I had to always pick the person who made the wish. Kevs wish effectively made him beat the 24hr timer ahead of everyone else, meaning that I didn’t have to pick between people. Either way, Kev’s wish and the other wish, who I’m sure you can all figure out who made it, were very creative.

Proposal: Encouraging more wishes

Vetoed for the new Dynasty, failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 14 Jan 2010 08:27:26 UTC

Add a new subrule “Wish Recovery” to rule 2.2 “Wish Fulfillment”:

Within the 24 hours after the Djinn has finished granting a wish, the Adventurer who made that wish may (once per wish) roll “Wish Recovery: DICE4” in the GNDT. If the roll comes up as a 4, that Adventurer may increase his wishes by 1.

Basically, reduces the chance that making a wish will cost a wish permanently; sometimes magic leaks out and you get your slot back.

Declaration of Victory: I have it in the bag

Times out, fails 9-4 -Darth

Adminned at 13 Jan 2010 07:51:43 UTC

I declare victory, based on the following analysis:

1. I possess the Bag of London
2. By necessary implication, I possess all objects, including Relics, that are in the Bag of London.
3. Per the Universe page, London, Ontario is in the Bag of London.
4. By operation of AIS’s wish, Funafuti’s location is identical to the location of London, Ontario.
5. By necessary implication, Funafuti (and all Relics sharing a location at Funafuti) are in the Bag of London
6. Therefore, I possess all Relics, including all four amulets that enable me to declare Victory.

Wishes granted

Ok, big batch of changes.

First, Kev I’m not granting your wish because of the following wishes changing the landscape and removing the location ya stated. I ran into the pm a day limit, didn’t even know we had a limit on pms.

Ais fired a trio of wishes, one that affects only him. the others are as follows. The first sent everyone to Funafuti (the capital of Tuvalu). The second shrunk the world down to a single point, such that all locations on it become the same(ais wording). This has the indirect result of also moving all relics to said location as well. And before anyone yells, the rules say you can’t directly wish for any of the relics to move. Atleast the way I’m reading it anyway.

This dynasty is pretty boring now

I go idle. See you next dynasty. Quorum remains twelve.

To Qwaz and Wak

HAPPY 1ST BLOGNOMIC BIRTHDAY! It was a yr ago today, more or less lol, that you two joined. Congrats on making it a yr and for prob being the only BN’ers to live through no less then 3 proposal attempts to get ya both banned and the rare time I blow my cool on here(per the second attempt i belive to ban ya lol). Ya both matured and got a dynasty each, even if ya kinda bailed on urs Wak =P. Try to stay out of trouble.

The historical record

A note to the Djinn: could you keep a secret record of all wishes made (who made them and their exact wording) somewhere, so we can put it on the wiki, or in the blog, at the end of the dynasty as a record of what happened?

Deep Freeze

Now that the four pieces of the Amulet are with four different people (or will be, by this time tomorrow), and the fact that Relics cannot be transferred between Adventurers by wishing or otherwise, the only way to achieve victory seems to be to race after the Go-Faster Gloves. That mechanic seems extremely silly. So time to throw out the awkward movement rules and go back to this being a wishing dynasty?

Protosal: Djinni of the Ring

The idea here is to make Wak the Djinni, but make Darknight the Djinni of the Ring, who can grant wishes, but has more limits, most notably that you must be carrying the Ring. (On the other hand, you lose Power instead not Wishes.)

Relics

Few new things about the relics.

The Go-Faster Gloves were used so they are hidden again. And theres a new Relic. Its called the Bag of London, the only effect it really has is that it holds London, Ontario.

Call for Judgment: Dijini are supposed to grant valid wishes

AQed, fails 2-13. Ienpw.

Adminned at 12 Jan 2010 21:18:48 UTC

This is the second time that the current Dijin has not granted a valid wish for me. The rules state that I can use a CFJ to make the Dijin grant my wish, and so I choose to do so.
My wish was:
I wish that you would create a new relic with the property text of “If this relic is owned by any adventurer, tecslicer has achieved victory.”

The dijin replied that it was not granted “only because I want to let everyone have a fair chance” Which feels like a parent giving everybody else 10 points because one player made a good move, and this is upsetting all the other children. Everyone DOES have a fair chance to wish for this very thing, to not get the relic, to prevent me and anybody else from getting the relic, to do any number of things to make this not give me the win, but to not allow it on this basis is unsporting for me, and anybody else that takes the time to think up clever wishes.

Therefore if this CFJ passes force the Djinni to create a new relic with the property text of “If this relic is owned by any adventurer, tecslicer has achieved victory.”

Relics wished into the open

Well first off, I"M FREEEE! So send those wishes. Second, per a wish, all still hidden relics locations have been revealed. They are as follows:

Lamp- Great Wall (had to be rehidden even if I’m not in it lol)

Ring of Pain-  found

Transport Rod- Easter Isle

Go-Gloves- found

Amulet Parts(in order on the list)- Grand Canyon, Great Pyramids, 3rd part with yabba, Machu Picchu

Unidle

Sorry, around the holidays there I got a bit distracted, I thought I’ve posted/voted within the idle period, but meh. I unidle.

Proposal: Rehidings

Quorumed 16-0 -Darth

Adminned at 11 Jan 2010 17:14:51 UTC

Change the description of the Transportation Rod to:

The Transportation Rod may be used by the possessing Adventurer to change their location to any other valid location once. The Transportation Rod must be removed from the Adventurer’s Relics entry in the GNDT once used, after which the Djinn shall decide on a new hiding place for it.

Change the description of the Go-Faster Gloves to:

The Adventurer with the Go-Faster Gloves may steal one relic from an Adventurer whose Location is the same as their own. The Go-Faster Gloves must be removed from the Adventurer’s Relics entry in the GNDT once used, after which the Djinn shall decide on a new hiding place for them.

Making the Rod be rehidden, as opposed to just vanishing; also making the Gloves be rehidden.

That strange feeling that someone is following you…

It occurs to me now that possessing a relic is pretty much pointless presently as long as someone has the Go-Faster Gloves.  There’s absolutely no way for me to outrun Alethiophile in the long run.  And presently, even in the short run :P

Oh well.  Easy come, easy go.

Proposal: Don’t Spawn On Me!

Quorumed 14-0 -Darth

Adminned at 11 Jan 2010 17:13:19 UTC

Change the line in Rule 2.6.1 that reads:

If an Adventurer has no Location, they may set their Location to that of any other Adventurer.

to:

If an Adventurer has no Location, their Location is set to “Baghdad, Iraq” automatically.

Let’s just make Baghdad the universal respawn point, such as it is already when an oracle is consulted. If anyone’s sitting at an oracle locale (e.g.), and then someone unidles, they can just zap to that spot.

Proposal: Someone’s spider sense is tingling

Fails 10-2. Ienpw_III. Note that idle admins are still admins.

Adminned at 11 Jan 2010 16:48:40 UTC

Add a subrule to the “Riddles” rule (if it exists), as follows:

During any period in which the Djinni is in the Lamp, at least once every forty-eight (48) hours, the Djinni shall post a blog post indicating which Adventurer (or Adventurers, as described more fully below) are the “Warmest” with respect to the Lamp and with respect to at least one other Relic (or more than one, if the Djinni so desires) that is not possessed by any Adventurer, if there be any.

With respect to a given Relic, the Adventurer who is the “Warmest” is the Adventurer whose Location (as of the time that the blog post is made) is closest to that Relic’s Location; provided that if the Djinni determines that multiple Adventurers are approximately equidistant from the Relic’s location such that it is not reasonably practicable for the Djinni to determine which of them is closest then they shall all be the Warmest.

If the Djinni does not post such a blog post within the required time period then any Adventurer may roll DICEX (where X is the number of active Adventurers) and post a blog post indicating the purpose of the roll and the result, whereupon the Location of the Lamp shall be changed to the Location of the Xth Adventurer listed in the GNDT, counting down from the top of the list; provided that the Location of the Lamp may not be changed again by operation of this sentence until after the Djinni again fails to post the “Warmest” blog post within the required time period.

Proposal: Pocket Reliquary

Quorumed, 15-0 -Darth

Adminned at 11 Jan 2010 06:23:55 UTC

In Rule 2.9 (Relics), replace “All relics must be in an undisclosed hiding place, which must be a valid Location in the Universe, and must be set by the Djinn prior to any hints being given about that relic’s location.” with:-

Each Relic is either carried by an Adventurer, or languishing in an undisclosed hiding place, which is a valid Location in the Universe selected by the Djinn.

“All relics must be in an undisclosed hiding place” seems like an oversight, if we can also carry them around. Did it just mean “must start in”?

Proposal: My magnificent creation of 4 poles on a single Earth debunks puny 1-axis rotation.

Times out 2-9 -Darth

Adminned at 11 Jan 2010 06:22:08 UTC

Set the Location of all Adventurers with Location equivalent to “South Pole” to “Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station”.

Set the Location of all Adventurers with Location equivalent to “North Pole” to “Barneo”.

Set the Location of all Adventurers whose Location is a line of latitude or longitude to “-”.

Change “The prime meridian does not exist.” on the Universe page to “The North Pole, South Pole, and all lines of latitude and longitude do not exist.”

Having four poles and all the lines of longitude and latitude except one makes no sense. (Apologies to Dr. Gene Ray, Wisest Human.)

Proposal: Get Lamp

Times out 12-0 -Darth

Adminned at 11 Jan 2010 06:20:50 UTC

Remove the paragraph of Rule 2.4 (Djinni in a lamp, baby) beginning “If an Adventurer has the same Location as the Djinni, and the Djinni is in the Lamp”.

Reword the Lamp effect in Rule 2.9.1 (Directory of Relics) to:-

When an Adventurer is awarded the Lamp, they automatically free the Djinni from it, if he is inside it. Upon doing so, the Djinni leaves the Lamp, the Adventurer gains 1 Wish (unless they were the last Adventurer to be responsible for the Djinni entering the Lamp) and the Lamp is moved to an undisclosed hiding place.

Making the Lamp work like the other relics, which removes the unclear “same Location” problem.

Proposal: Pangaea Is Dumb

Times out 10-6 -Darthrs

Adminned at 11 Jan 2010 06:19:30 UTC

Delete the text in “Universe” that reads as follows:

The pangea super landmass has reformed, removing the Alantic Ocean except for around the Florida area and many Alantic isles. All islands still exist.

As if moving around the world wasn’t daunting enough… now we have to figure out the new distances between places based on how Pangaea is formed? Blech.

Well now

Well, the super continent has reformed. However, I decided to leave enough of the Alantic to keep all of its isles intact, and all islands for the matter. So more or less i basicly just dragged the continents across the surface lol. Enjoy everything being closer.

Proposal: Wish Queue Try Again

Passes 11-6. Josh

Adminned at 10 Jan 2010 14:23:35 UTC

In Rule 2.4 after the sentence:

The Djinni is unable to grant any Wishes or Boons while he is inside the Lamp.

Add another sentence which says:

Any wish made when the Djinni is inside the Lamp will be automatically denied.

Append the following paragraph to the end of Rule 2.4:

The Djinni’s Location cannot be changed to the Lamp if the Djinni was Freed by an Adventurer within the last 24 hours.

Prevent the scam by forcing the Djinni to stay outside the Lamp for at least 24 hours.

Proposal: South Pole Sucks

Self-killed, failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 09 Jan 2010 02:48:43 UTC

Each Adventurer whose EVC on this proposal contains the text “South Pole Sucks”, and has a Location within 100 miles of the South Pole, shall have their Location set to Baghdad.

This time as a proposal.

Idling

Too much work to do now. Sorry!

As the Terminator would say…I’ll be back.

Hello all!

Hi, my name’s yabbaguy. Just should point out that the confirm e-mail never came to my gmail account for whatever reason, but anyway, I am ready to play. :)

Idling

This dynasty has changed from clever wishing to an Easter Egg hunt. I idle.
Quorum is 12.

Concept discussion: close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades

“If an Adventurer has the same Location as the Djinni, and the Djinni is in the Lamp, then that Adventurer may Free the Djinni, as a daily action”.  But how close does the Adventurer have to be, and how would the Adventurer know?  Should the Adventurer be required to PM the Djinni and say “I think I’ve found you?” whereupon the Djinni is required to either grant the wish or expressly say “no you didn’t”?  How close would the Adventurer have to be the Djinni: if the Adventurer’s location is, say, “Holy of Holies (LDS Church)” (which is a room in the Salt Lake Temple) and the Djinni’s location is “Salt Lake Temple”, then do they have the same location?  What if the Adventurer is in Salt Lake Temple and the Djinni is in “Holy of Holies (LDS Church)”?  Should, say, a 30-mile radius of any point comprising the Djinni’s Location count as close enough for the Adventurer to be able to free the Djinni?  (30 is approximately the square root of 1000).

Proposal: Relic rules fix

Reached quorum 13 votes FOR to 0 AGAINST. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 09 Jan 2010 02:44:32 UTC

Remove the text

Current status: unfound

wherever it appears in the ruleset.

Rule 2.9 states that relics are tracked in the GNDT and it doesn’t make sense to be editing the ruleset whenever runes are found, aside from there being no built-in mechanic to do so.

Next stop: Valhalla

Oh, mighty Oracle of Delphi, please bestow upon me the arcane location of the mighty Ring of Pain and smite my enemies with the smoldering fury of Zeus.

Ok, ok… I’ll settle for only the Ring.  I’ll just ask Thor to do my dirty work.

Proposal: Wish Queue

Self-killed, failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 08 Jan 2010 09:34:45 UTC

In Rule 2.4 after the sentence:

The Djinni is unable to grant any Wishes or Boons while he is inside the Lamp.

Add another sentence which says:

Any wish made when the Djinni is inside the Lamp will be automatically denied.

Prevent building up a backlog of wishes when the Djinni is in the Lamp.

Proposal: Marco!

Failed, lots to two. Josh

Adminned at 08 Jan 2010 07:27:59 UTC

Add a new rule, entitled “Hide and Seek”:

Some Adventurers are hidden. These Adventurers may be referred to as Hiders. There may never be more than 5 Hiders. All non-hidden Adventurers may be referred to as Seekers. A Hider may never also be a Seeker and a Seeker may never also be a Hider. A Hider must have an account on Twitter. (The account is not required to be active for any purpose other than that stated in this rule.)

Provided that they have fulfilled other criteria that permit them to do so, and have not changed their location in the preceding 24 hours, an Adventurer may Hide by making a post to that effect to the front page of BlogNomic. They must then append an asterisk to their location in the GNDT. This asterisk designates the Adventurer as a Hider and must remain next to their location in the GNDT for as long as they are Hiders. They must also immediately PM the Djinn with a secret hashtag - preferrably not one that is in common use. (The Djinn has the right to refuse any hashtag that they deem unsuitable for any reason, and demand or impose a replacement.)

Thereafter the Hider may move as normal, except now they are not obligated to update the GNDT to reflect any change in their location until 24 hours after the move has taken place. Instead, they must record their movements as they happen on Twitter, including the hashtag that they specified to the Djinn when they became a Hider.

If a Seeker suspects that they are in the same location as a Hider, they may make a post to BlogNomic to that effect, naming the Hider in question. The Hider or the Djinn must then confirm or deny the accusation as soon as possible. If the Seeker was correct then that Hider ceases to be a Hider, and the Seeker may steal one of the Hider’s Relics. A Hider may not move while there is an unresolved accusation against them.

If a Hider manages to stay Hidden for more than 30 consecutive days then they have achieved victory.

For the purposes of this rule, to be “in the same location” is defined as:
a) having the exact same location value;
b) being in a location that is no more than 10% larger than the target location, or 10 square miles, whichever is larger, and which contains the location being sought;
c) being in a location that is contained completely by the location being sought; or
d) being within 20 miles of the location being sought.

A Hider faces some limitations to their actions, as follows:
• A Hider may not use any Place of Interest as specified under rule 2.6.2.
• A Hider may not Consult an Oracle or find a Relic.
• A Hider may make a wish, as long as they are otherwise legally able to do so.

Wishes may not be used to change, reveal or otherwise tamper with the location of a Hider, unless the wish is made by that Hider themselves, nor may they be used to jump to the location of a Hider if that Hider’s location cannot be accurately specified by the wisher (i.e. wishes along the lines of “I wish I was where Hider 1 is” will be rejected).

Add the following to the list of Relics in rule 2.9.1:

Code Wheel
Allows the possessing Adventurer to Hide. 5 numbered Code Wheels exist, and are consider to be separate relics for the purposes of consulting oracles.
Code Wheel 1 status: unfound
Code Wheel 2 status: unfound
Code Wheel 3 status: unfound
Code Wheel 4 status: unfound
Code Wheel 5 status: unfound

If a majority of EVCs to this proposal contain the text “get started”, then the enacting admin must decide which Locations the five Code Wheels will occupy and publish them in a separate post to BlogNomic.

Proposal: Loud Tourists

Timed out and enacted, 11-4. Josh

Adminned at 08 Jan 2010 07:26:01 UTC

In Rule 2.8, replace “post a blog post stating that the Adventurer is consulting the Oracle” with:-

Jetlag

Comment Tracking?

Is there any easier way to track new comments?  The deluge of email seems a little cludgy.  Is there an RSS equivalent for tracking new comments to posts?  Apologies in advance if this is a newbie question.

I’d do these if I could

I think there should be forms we can fill that automatically adjust the templates. So we can change the colour scheme without searching through pages and pages.
There should also be one for the emperor, so that Sparrowscript and BNbot can just check a certain location and see who the emperor is, without needing to be updated.
It would also be cool if proposals could be autofailed (enacting would be too difficult) if they could be.

I’m not saying that people should go do these, but if you’ve got nothing to do, why not give them a try?

Call for Judgment: This sucks.

Failed, 13 votes to 3 (as best as I can make out). Josh

Reset the poles to their default locations. Reset the coordinate system. Move all players whose EVC on this proposal contains the phrase “South Pole Sucks” to O’Hare International Airport.

Proposal: Expressions of Interest

Passed, 15-1, with all of the riders sneaking through. Josh

Adminned at 05 Jan 2010 13:12:09 UTC

If the Proposal titled “The Da Genie Code” failed, this Proposal does nothing.

If a majority of all EVCs on this proposal contain the text “ring”, add the following to the list of relics:

Ring of Pain
The Ring of Pain may be used by the possessing Adventurer, as a daily action, to increase their Power and Corruption by 1, unless doing so would raise either above their legal limit, in which case it cannot be used.
Current status: unfound

If a majority of all EVCs on this proposal contain the text “wand”, add the following to the list of relics:

Transportation Rob
The Transportation Rod may be used by the possessing Adventurer to change their location to any other valid location once. The Transportation Rod must be removed from the Adventurer’s Relics entry in the GNDT once used.
Current status: unfound

If a majority of all EVCs on this proposal contain the text “larceny”, add the following to the list of relics:

Go-Faster Gloves
As a weekly action, the Adventurer with the Go-Faster Gloves may steal one relic from an Adventurer whose Location is the same as their own.
Current status: unfound

Proposal: The Da Genie Code

Passed, 13-1. Josh

Adminned at 05 Jan 2010 13:08:26 UTC

If the Proposal titled “Getting Warmer” failed, this Proposal does nothing.

Add a new rule, entitled “Relics”:

Certain relics exist which may augment an Adventurer’s capabilities. As a weekly action, the Djinn may announce the creation of a new relic, specifying its name and properties, in a blog post. All relics must be in an undisclosed hiding place, which must be a valid Location in the Universe, and must be set by the Djinn prior to any hints being given about that relic’s location. Relics are awarded, by the Djinn, to any Adventurer whose location is the same as the hiding place (the Djinn’s decision on whether or not this has taken place is final) for more than 24 continuous hours.

Wishes may be used to create new relics but may not be used to transfer ownership of a relic, either from one hiding place to another, from a hiding place to an Adevnturer, or from one Adventurer to another. Relics owned by an Adventurer are tracked in the GNDT; new Adventurers start with no relics.

Add a sub-rule to this rule, entitled “Directory of Relics”:

This sub-rule contains a complete list of all relics. Any relic not listed in this rule is not valid and may have no effect. The Djinn is responsible for updating this list to ensure its accuracy.

The Lamp:
The Adventurer who finds the Lamp may release the Djinn, as per rule 2.4 - Djinni in a lamp, baby. The Lamp may not be kept by an Adventurer - if the Adventurer elects not to release the Djinn then the Lamp remains in its current location.
Current status: unfound.

Amend the rule entitled “Riddles” as follows:

Certain Locations contain Oracles. These Locations are identified on the Universe page.  If an Adventurer’s Location contains an Oracle then that Adventurer may post a blog post stating that the Adventurer is consulting the Oracle to determine a relic’s Location, whereupon, within 72 hours, the Djinni shall privately communicate to that Adventurer and to the Grand Vizier (and, if that Adventurer is the Grand Vizier, to the Sultan) a hint as to that relic’s Location (and if the Djinni does not do so, then the relic’s Location shall be moved to that Adventurer’s location).  Upon consulting the Oracle, that Adventurer’s Location shall be changed to Baghdad, Iraq in honor of “Arabian Nights”.  If the relic in question is still hidden 24 hours after having provided the hint as aforesaid, then the Djinni may, but is not required to, post the hint in a blog post.

Add a column to the GNDT, entitled “Relics”, leaving it blank for all players.

Unidling

A happy new year to all. Quorum stays at 12.

Proposal: Another location fix

Timed out and passed, 11-0 with 2 unresolved defs. Josh

Adminned at 05 Jan 2010 13:06:49 UTC

Replace the text in Rule 2.6 that reads

Each Adventurer has a “Location” , which is tracked in the GNDT. Locations are limited to real-life (i.e., not fictional or mythical), existent (as of the Reference Time) locations on Earth that have their own article in the Reference Source, and have a size or area, as specified in the Reference Source, of no more than one thousand square miles. For example, Independence Hall (United States), Elvis’ Pink Cadillac, and New York City are all legitimate Locations; while Narnia, Heaven, Asia and the Library of Alexandria do not exist as legitimate Locations. If there is any dispute or controversy over whether an Adventurer’s Location is a legitimate Location, the Djinni may change that Location to any value.

As-is, the rule doesn’t state that Locations are in the gamestate Universe, so for instance DK’s decision to abolish the Prime Meridian doesn’t have any effect on whether it’s a legitimate Location.

Something is happening

You all get the strange feeling that the ground is moving, the clouds seem to be whizzing past and those by the south pole swear its getting warmer.

EDIT: Those along the coastlines (namely Tec right now) can’t help but think they see something cresting over the horizon. It looks strangely like… land

EDIT2: As AL said, Aqua did indeed make a wish to reform the supercontinent. Course he did wish for it to happen over the span of 5 days so it won’t be fully reformed till late evening Friday. And this was before I got lamped btw. On the flip, ya can get out of the south pole now lol. Man, I’m so gonna have to figure out what to call the south pole now though. Once this is done its so gonna need a name change.

Another one bites the dust

Falkuon falls idle.

There are 22 Adventurers. Quorum remains 12.

Proposal: Getting Warmer

Quorumed 17-0. Ienpw_III

Adminned at 04 Jan 2010 08:47:38 UTC

Part 1: Place the Djinni in the Lamp (but the award or enactment of this Part 1 of this Proposal shall not, in and of itself, cause any Wish to be awarded to any Adventurer).  Place the Lamp in a Location selected by the Djinni but do not update the GNDT to disclose the Lamp’s Location.

Part 2: Enact a dynastic rule called: “Riddles”, as follows:

Certain Locations contain Oracles, these Locations are identified on the Universe page.  If an Adventurer’s Location contains an Oracle then that Adventurer may post a blog post stating that the Adventurer is consulting the Oracle to determine the Lamp’s Location, whereupon, within 72 hours, the Djinni shall privately communicate to that Adventurer and to the Grand Vizier (and, if that Adventurer is the Grand Vizier, to the Sultan) a hint as to the Lamp’s Location (and if the Djinni does not do so, then the Lamp’s Location shall be moved to that Adventurer’s location).  Upon consulting the Oracle, that Adventurer’s Location shall be changed to Baghdad, Iraq in honor of “Arabian Nights”.  If the Djinni is still located in the Lamp 24 hours after having provided the hint as aforesaid, then the Djinni may, but is not required to, post the hint in a blog post.

Part 3: Add the following to the Universe Page:

The following Locations contain Oracles:
- Delphi, Greece
- Great Sphinx of Giza
- Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral (thought to be constructed on the ruins of one of the principal Mesoamerican temples)

Part 4: In the rule “Djinni in a lamp, baby”, change the text that presently reads:

IThe Djinni has a Location, tracked in his “Location” GNDT field. The Djinni’s Location may be “Everywhere” (signifying that the Djinni is free), “Lamp” (signifying that the Djinn is inside the Lamp in an unknown location) or the name of a valid Location from Rule 2.6 (signifying that the Djinn is inside the Lamp and that the Lamp is at that Location).
The Djinni is unable to grant any Wishes or Boons while he is inside the Lamp.
If the Djinni is ever put inside the Lamp, his Location becomes “Lamp”; if he ever leaves the Lamp, his location becomes “Everywhere”. If the Djinni’s Location is “Lamp”, he may adjust his Location to any valid Location from Rule 2.6.

so that it reads:

IThe Djinni has a Location, tracked in his “Location” GNDT field. The Djinni’s Location may be “Everywhere” (signifying that the Djinni is free) or “Lamp” (signifying that the Djinn is inside the Lamp in an unknown location).
The Djinni is unable to grant any Wishes or Boons while he is inside the Lamp.
If the Djinni is ever put inside the Lamp, his Location becomes “Lamp”; if he ever leaves the Lamp, his location becomes “Everywhere”. If the Djinni’s Location is “Lamp”, he may adjust the Lamp’s Location to any valid Location from Rule 2.6 but having done so, may not do so again until after the Djinni has been released from the Lamp and then put back inside the Lamp.  The Location of the Lamp shall not be tracked in the GNDT.

Proposal: In Five Hundred Metres Turn Left

Self-killed, failed by Kevan.

Replace the paragraph beginning “Each Adventurer has a “Location”, which is tracked in the GNDT.” with:-

Each Adventurer has a “Location”, which is tracked in the GNDT. Locations are limited to existent (as of the Reference Time) locations on Earth that have their own article in the Reference Source, and which have “Coordinates” specified in the top right of that article.

Taking a stab at an entirely unambiguous Location system. Wikipedia seems pretty good on giving geographic coordinates for cities, towns, buildings and landmarks.

Proposal: Why drive when you can pay others to do it?

Passes 13-0. Quorum for.
The irony here is that you can go to an Airport and go anywhere instantly, presumably via jet, while with an actual Jet you can only go 300 miles a day.—alethiophile

Adminned at 03 Jan 2010 22:03:25 UTC

Add the following text as a new paragraph at the end of rule “2.6.2 Places of Interest”:

If a Location is an “International Airport” according of the Reference Source, it is considered an International Airport. If an Adventurer’s Location is within 10 miles of an International Airport and their Power is at least 1, as a daily action they may spend 1 Power and change their location to any other location which is within 10 miles of any other International Airport.

This is an useful method for covering long distances, however unlike a vehicle it requires to spend Power on each trip, which means it’s more costly in the long run.

Much to your chagrin

I de-idle myself. Quorum stays at 12.

Heads up to everyone

I’m prob not gonna grant power up wishes this weekend. I’m under the weather and the current background color, atleast on my comp, is causing my headache to worsen everytime i’m on. I can get away with about 5mins on before it gets to bad but theres no way I can stare at the GNDT for any length of time. I show be well by monday. I hate winter. Srry ahead of time guys.

Aquafraternally Yours joins the madness?

Greetings, folks!

I’m newly registered.  This all looks just a bit daunting, but I’m sure I’ll figure it out as I go along ;)

Call for Judgment: Still about locations

Reached quorum and failed. Josh

Adminned at 04 Jan 2010 02:51:10 UTC

NoOneImportant changed his location to “Christendom”, and when challenged with the fact that Christendom in the geographical or historical sense “usually refers collectively to Christian majority countries or countries in which Christianity dominates or was a territorial phenomenon” (quoted from the reference source) which is well over 1,000 square miles, replied that he agreed with that, but intended it in the cultural sense of the community of all Christians, which at less than 3 billion people at less than 4 square feet a person comes out to less than 1,000 square miles.

Since “the community of all Christians” is (while real-world, currently existing and on Earth) not “a location” as required by the rules, set his location to “South Pole”.

Call for Judgment: Locations again

Passed, 12 votes to 3. Josh

Adminned at 05 Jan 2010 06:28:12 UTC

Tecslicer moved from the South Pole to the Statue of Liberty, and when challenged said his location of “South Pole” was actually the headquarters of Southpole, a clothing company based in Fort Lee, New Jersey.

Since “Southpole” is typographically distinct from “South Pole”, not itself a location, and not where the Djinni put him after Digibomber’s wish, set tecslicer’s location to “South Pole, Antarctica”.

Proposal: Let’s blow this popsicle stand!

Passes 13-0. Quorum for.—alethiophile

Create a subrule of Rule 2.6.1 “Movement” entitled “Operation Deep Freeze” that reads:

Adventurers with a Location equivalent to Christchurch, New Zealand; McMurdo Station, Antarctica; or Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station may change their location to any other of those locations as a weekly action.

“Equivalent to” is intended to mean that a player with Location “Christchurch, NZ” can still use the rule to travel.

a spam?

How does one find out or change one’s GNDT password?

Apologies for wasting a post, I couldn’t find it in the docs.

Wishes granted

Happy New Yr all. New Years wishes that I’ve granted.

Aleth did the *make my power 18 twice* wish, putting him where he is now.

DC tried to pull a paradox on me by wishing for London to be put in a bag behind a dumpster in London. However, as DC should have learned after his first wish got delayed, ya need to specify. Therefor, this London (http://www.london.ca) is now in a bag behind a dumpster located in the London found in the UK.

EDIT: After pondering on this one, I have granted quite a dinger against you prime meridian riders. Orni wished that Earths axis run east to west instead of north and south. The new east and west poles are located in Padang, Indonesia (the East Pole) and Esmeraldas, Ecuador (the West Pole). The prime meridian does not exist in this universe anymore. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antipodes#Cities shows that they do indeed line up like the north and south poles, witch still exist mind ya, as all planets in essense have four poles.

Proposal: A Helicopter Arrives

Enact a new rule, called “Evacuation”:-

Any Adventurer whose Location is the South Pole, with the exception of Digibomber, may - as a daily action - change their Location to any Location they have visited previously.

Dustin and Zephyr fall idle.

Proposal: Standing Room Only

Timed out 5 votes FOR to 8 AGAINST. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 03 Jan 2010 04:00:21 UTC

If “Just in case, location fix” failed, replace “of no more than one thousand square miles” in Rule 2.6 (Universe) with:-

between one square foot and one thousand square miles

And add “the Prime Meridian” as an example between “Heaven” and “Asia” in the same rule.

If any Adventurers are in Locations less than one square foot in area, return them to their previous Location (if they had a previous Location).

A different attempt at ruling out zero-size locations.
